To Our Readers: Beginning with today's edition, The Jewish News breaks new ground with a section geared toward the needs and interests of Jewish singles. Entitled Single Life, the section represents a commitment by The Jewish News to service our singles — an often-neglected group within the community — with information that will be insightful, enjoyable and useful. Local News Editor Heidi Press and Sandra Maurer, editor of the Jewish Singles Event Source newsletter, will be teaming up to provide a weekly menu of stories, col- umns, calendars and features. It is our expectation that Single Life will provide our Jewish singles with a weekly "meeting place" and bring them closer to the Jewish community ... and each other. We welcome your comments and suggestions. Arthur M. Horwitz Associate Publisher, The Jewish News RODNICK BROS. AUDETTE CADILLAC, INC. Women, Greater Detroit Section, may I express our pleasure in se- eing the space accorded to the excellent article "Vanishing Volunteers" in the Oct. 10 is- sue. The authors cited the is- sues with which we too have wrestled in maintaining our 3,000 membership in the Greater Detroit area and in involving our members in our various programs and proj- ects ... We were delighted to see such issues as volunteer burn-out, denigration of vol- unteerism and lack of volun- teer availability handled in such a forthright and well- researched manner. Perhaps in bringing these issues be- fore the public, interest in volunteerism will grow and we can see a resurgence of the commitment to help others that has made our community such a vital one. Terran R. Leemis President, NCJW Butcher's Suit Vs. Hierarchy /— The comment "Butcher's Suit A Grave Error" (Letters, Oct. 3), seems in itself to be quite erroneous. Communal discipline depends on a hierarchy that has not been corrupted. Furthermore, if some one person can prove said corruption, . it then be- comes a manifestation of the highest responsibility. The attorney who has taken this case should be commended and not con- demned. In the pragmatic sense, be he Jewish or non- Jewish, any person who would cast aspersions toward such a man just for doing what his legal calling says he must do, then, maybe, this is the type of person who should be reprimanded. As a Jew myself, I can say, there is only one constituted leadership to which all Jews are to give undivided adher- ance, and that is to Torah it- self. If we put our hierarchy above Torah, then we commit the Averah of "worshipping the false idol" of the hierar- chy and not Torah, something we must never do. To this, there certainly is no excep- tion. Michael Ben Abraham Oak Park Where Are They Now? I just read the article "East of Woodward" (Oct. 3), and I thought it was very good. It is nice to know that there is a Jewish community growing in eastern Oakland County. What I would like to see now is an article about where former Detroit area Jews, like myself, are living outside of Detroit or even Michigan, and what they are doing ... Peter Grant Wichita, Kan. Pluralism Vs. Single Issue Recent articles and the Oct. 10 editorial ("Not Only Is- rael") continue to hammer on the question of whether the Jewish community can afford to be (or be viewed to be) a "single issue" community. A few observations are in order: The implication is that we have done so well on the "single issue" of Israel that we can now turn some of our political concern as a group to other issues. This is far from the case. The fact is that we didn't win the AWACS vote and this vote has see a pattern which con- tinues to this very day. The Saudis have gotten the bulk of their shopping list in recent years. Other Arab states haven't faired too poorly either. Let's be honest about it — the first time people started talking about our being a "one-issue-community" was when we lost the AWACS vote and we started feeling threatened as a community. Also, almost every time a Jewish spokesman (and your editorial) says that we should Continued on next page - First Consultation Free 356-4282 ", ■, diol*Att.efltz* , **:VAIWa4V,r1ftaliplWaliplft-Att.- Their-praxis' 6 Ri m ths th he hands Chiropractic is a natural healing method.
