"The tendency in Jewish history to embrace failure is certainly a weak point," he observed. Those who believe' that history should be emu- lated "make history (their) master instead of a source of reference." This clearly viol- ates Eban's thesis of the Jewish belief in free choice and progress. With self-preservation, rather than salvation, in mind, Eban called for the political separation of Israel from the Palestinians in the territories. The Palestinian problem is the "darkest cloud" facing Israel, he said. If America was to hold 80 million Russians against their will "people would L. A. NISSAN, INC. 28200 W. But that is the ratio of Israelis to the Arabs under occupation in the territories. Of Shimon Peres' frenzied diplomatic activity in recent months, Eban said the goal was not "to be photographed with Hassan or Mubarak.", Rather, "the result would be the termination -of our coer- cive rule" over the Palesti- nians. Eban's appearance was the first address in the Shanik- Fleischer Forum, an annual series of talks exploring the Jewish impact on civilization. Fisher listed the problems challenging the Jewish community here and around the world, particu- larly in Israel where eco- nomic sacrifice is bearing fruit — but at great cost to its people. What set the tone for the evening, though, were the personal feelings he and his guests shared as they an- nounced their pledges. Samuel Frankel, back from a brief visit to Poland, de- scribed what he and his son found in the town where his parents were born. "Three thousand people once lived there: 60 percent of the town was Jewish. All we found were five tombstones lying in an open field — no other sign or trace that Jews had lived there. After that experience, Israel was such a lift to the spirit." In addition to the $10.3 million total announced for another evening, the $276,000 was pledged for Project Renewal, the partner- ship- pan that has linked world Jewry with the resi- dents of disadvantaged neighborhoods in Israel. Jane Sherman, national chairman of Project Renewal, urged De- troit's continued involvement with the program, which has recorded enormous successes in Ramla. Dr. Conrad Giles, president of the Jewish Welfare Feder- ation, described the evening as "extraordinary" because "whatever we do as a people, whatever we do as a commu- nity, is in large part deter- mined by what we do to- night." Despite the seriousness of purpose, the evening had its lighter moments. Fisher said he's made 125 trips to Israel, "which adds up to two to three years of living in Israel. People are wondering why I don't just make aliyah."
