All the boxes are equip- ped for sports spectators — with a kitchen and a bar — and open up onto a patio-like terrace. The arena will have 180 box suites — that's quite a few, perhaps the most in the country. Jou Louis Arena has 88, which is on the high side of average among arenas in the nation, and most of those rent for $35,000 a year. And marketing skyboxes may prove to 'be more difficult under the new tax code. Under the new proposal, cor- porations that lease private boxes won't be allowed to de- duct the total amount, rather just 80 percent of the cost of ordinary seats. When asked if market re- search has been an initial part of the arena plans, Hermelin said research is needed when considering an office building site that's al- ready surrounded by several office buildings. "But," he ex- plains, "it's really pretty sim- ple when you're the only arena around." ❑ Latin American Bishops Move On Anti-Semitism Our anniversary sale prices will cover all of our custom jewelry, name brand watches, fine crystal and accessories. JEWISH -NATIONAL FUND 557-6644 18 Friday, October 24, 1986 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS New York (JTA) — The Latin American Bishops Con- ference, in an historic move to combat anti-Semitism, has drawn up guidelines for the use of Catholic educators in teaching about Jews and Judaism. The guidelines are the product of Catholic- Jewish meeting in Bogota, Colombia, sponsored by the Bishops conference, the Anti- Defamation League of B'nai B'rith and the Latin Amer- ican Jewish Congress, it was announced last Monday. AccOrding to Rabbi Leon Klenicki, director of ADL's Interreligious Affairs Depart- ment, who led a six-member ADL delegation to Bogota, the guidelines will be finalized in December and submitted to church leaders, including Latin American cardinals, some 900 bishops across the continent, and Catholic educators. They are intended to: Remove vestiges of anti- Semitism from teaching the New Thstament, from Passion plays and Passion Week sermons. Ensure that Jews are not held responsible for the death of Jesus. Foster a spirit of neigh- borliness toward Latin American Jews so they will be viewed, according to Rab- bi Klenicki, "as people next door instead of only as those mentioned in the Bible." Mach Catholics about Jews and Judaism, even in areas where there are not Jews, because of the significance of such knowledge in understan- ding the roots of Catholicism. Emphasize the significance of the State of Israel for Jewish communities in Latin America and throughout the world. Klenicki said that the guidelines, when adopted, will represent another step for- ward in the Catholic church's desire to improve relations with Jews in the spirit of Vatican pronouncement over the past two decades. German Group To Drop Name New York — A group which calls itself the "Ger- man American Anti- Defamation League" and has anti-semitic ties will change its name at the urging of the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith. ADL's request followed a series of "educational adver- tisements" in the Washington Post and Washington Times last July and August signed by the "German American Anti-Defamation League." The ads complained of "the constant bombardment of propaganda against the Ger- man people," suggested that critics of Kurt Waldheim apply "the same judicial standards" to the career of former Israeli Premier Menachem- Begin and sol-, icited contributions for the group's "battle for truth and justice. Group To Fight Missionaries Due to what is described as "an intensified pattern of missionary activity within the Jewish state," Jews for Judaism announced that it will open a branch office in Jerusalem. Jews for Judaism, a coun- termissionary and Jewish outreach organization which works to monitor and combat deceptive Christian mission- ary efforts, currently has offices in Baltimore, Los Angeles and Harrisburg, Pa. The Jerusalem facility, scheduled to open in Novem- ber, will be headed by Rabbi Motty Berger, a graduate of Ner Israel Rabbinical Col- lege.
