Paula acted as a shield, pro-
tecting Ben-Gurion from the
steady stream of callers who
sought the prime minister at
all hours of the day and
night.
There is a story that Paula
often sent the guard at the
prime minister's residence
out to buy vegetables for the
family's dinner. Once, the
guard protested, saying that
he had orders to protect the
prime minister. "Never
mind," Paula retorted. You
get the vegetables and I'll
protect the prime minister."
Over the years, Ben-Gurion
cultivated a new generation
of Israeli leaders: Shimon
Peres, Moshe Dayan, Teddy'
Kollelt and Yitzhak Navon
were all "Ben-Gurion's boys."

Gurion journeyed to the U.S.
in 1950 to inaugurate Israel
Bonds. Emma and her hus-
band, the late Morris
Schaver, were among a small
delegation sent to greet the
prime minister when his
plane landed in Detroit.
"It was a dark, cloudy day
when his plane landed," she
explains. "Dark clouds all
around. When Ben-Gurion
stepped out of the plane, it
was like the sky opened up.
It was almost like a biblical
event."
Jews lined the route to De-
troit, she says, standing in
the rain to greet Ben-Gurion.
"I admired him to the point
that I was tongue-tied in his
presence ... He was an awe-
some person."
"We used to get together
and talk tachlis," Chana
Michlin says of her visits
with Ben-Gurion after the
founding of the state. "Mostly
he was anxious that every-
body should pack up and go
to Israel.
Shortly before his death in
1973, Ben-Gurion spoke to
the World Zionist Congress
on his great love of the Bi-
ble," recalls Philip Slomovitz,
who attended the congress.
"Upon my return home, I
asked him for the text. He
mailed it to me with a re-
quest that I make a copy for
him. I did and I still have the
original."
"He was a really deter-
mined person," says Chana
Michlin. He and his genera-
tion were the real chalutzim.
Nothing else mattered" but
building the new Jewish
society in the land of Israel.
"It was a different Israel
then."
