THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

The scene is a suburban
schoolyard: grass, trees,
swings, children at play. A
car drives down the street,
alongside the schoolyard. A
shot rings out. One of the
children falls dead. The
others flee, screaming.
But there will be no inves-
tigation, no outcry, for this is
one of the black townships in
South Africa. The child was
black. The killer was white,
and not a crazed murderer,
but a policeman. After the

shooting, he places stones be-
sides the dead child's body.
The official alibi is concocted.
The random murder of in-
nocent children is but one of
the truths that Witness to
Apartheid will bring home to
you. It is a film that every
one of conscience must see.
There is only one public
showing of this powerful
documentary scheduled in the
Detroit area at this writing:
Friday, Oct. 24 at 7:30 p.m.
at the Marygrove Theatre,
Marygrove College. It is
worth making a special effort
to attend this showing.
No matter how much you
have seen on television or in
newspapers and magazines
about apartheid, you have
never been face-to-face with
it as you will be when you,
too, become a "Witness to
Apartheid." You will see and
hear the beaten and tortured
victims of the state-sponsored
terror. Your heart will go out
to the parents of the mur-
dered children.
I had never realized how
much of the South African
government's brutality was
focused on children until I
saw this film. It is a terrible
story, but one to which we
must pay attention.
The world did not want to
know what was happening in
Europe when the Nazis
slaughtered so many mil-
lions. Decent human beings,
all over the globe, must never
again turn their eyes away
when a government violates
the fundamental moral code.
Another aspect of Witness
to Apartheid that is particu-
larly revealing, and at the
same time particularly dis-
turbing, is the reaction of the
South African whites. Almost
all of those interviewed in
this documentary had never
been to a black township, had
no idea of what was happen-
ing in them, and wondered
why the blacks were making
such a fuss. Others expressed

quite openly the opinion that
the government would simply
have to use massive force in
a "wipe-out" to put down the
black resistance.
Archbishop Desmond Tutu
is used in several different
parts of the film. His most
moving moment comes when
he wonders why he still has
any influence left with his
people, considering that he
has been able to produce so
little for them in terms of
tangible progress.
It took courage on the part
of producer-director Sharon
Sopher to make this
documentary. It took courage
for the blacks and sympathe-
tic whites who appear in the
film to speak out.
It will take only a little ef-
fort on your part to see it.
And see it you should if you
care about what's happening
to fellow human beings in
South Africa whose skin hap-
pens to be black.

Israeli Tennis
Team Advances
In Davis Cup

New York (JTA) — Israel's
national tennis team defeated
host Switzerland 4-1 in the
Davis Cup European Zone B
final last week, moving Israel
for the first time into the
16-nation final round of com-
petition for the following
year's cup.
Most of the matches in the
surprise victory were lengthy
and hard-fought. Israeli
veteran Shlomo Glickstein
defeated Roland Stadler 4-6,
6-8, 8-6, 6-1, 4-3 (retired) when
Stadler dove and broke a leg.
Then Amos Mansdorael
defeated Jakob Hlasek 6-2,
1-6, 6-3, 3-6, 12-10. In doubles,
Hlasek and Markus Gund-
hardt beat Glickstein and
Shahar Perkiss 6-2, 6-4, 6-1.
Israel clinched the best-of-
five-match competition with
Glickstein's victory over
Hlasek 6-3, 1-6, 8-6, 10-12,
11-9. In the final match,
Mansdorf defeated Gund-
hardt 7-5, 6-3.
