Women Power
Or Prejudice?
At first glance, I was temp-
ted to dismiss Selma Wein-
traub's opinion in "Jewish
? Leadership Role Has Slowed
For Womeri\" (Oct. 10) as just
so many soured grapes. After
all, in these days of women's
liberation, perhaps the reason
more women are not in lead-
ership positions in our na-
tional organizations and con-
gregations is that none qual-
ified applied for the jobs!
However, upon further.
reading in that same issue,
we come across the article
"Celebrating the High Holy
Days With Your Children" by
Barbara Diamond Goldin. In
an otherwise interesting
piece, there occurs one consis-
tent flaw. In Ms. Goldin's
own words, and in the
sources she quotes, all refer-
ences made to a child are
with the male pronoun —
"he".
Words have power. The
choice of both words used and
not used have influence. To
refer to all children as "he,"
effectively undermining one-
half our total offspring, is as
callous as some television
evangelists assuming that all
"good Americans" go to
church on Sunday.
Perhaps one reason we do
not have more women in
leadership roles is that we're
still subtly teaching our chil-
dren that girls don't become
leaders. Thanks for remind-
ing me, Ms. Weintraub.

Jeffrey Biegel
Pianist Jeffrey Biegel will
entertain at the annual Bal-
four Celebration of the Metro
Detroit District, Zionist
Organization of America.
The concert, which also
features Ofra Haza and Gadi
Elon, will take place at 7:30
p.m. Nov. 2 at Ford Au-
ditorium.
Recently, Biegel received
the Juilliard School's William
Petschek Piano Debut Award.
Last year, he won the Uni-
versity of Maryland Interna-
tional Piano Festival Compe-
tition. In 1984, Biegel was a
prize winner at the Leeds
Competition in England.
Biegel is working on his
doctorate at Juilliard. He has
