Perlman suffered from polio
as a child.
According to Guyer, a
small group of donors have
picked up the tab. Everything
else is donated, including de-
corations, food, concert park-
ing and volunteers' time.
"The key to success is we
have a great group of volun-
teers," she said.
Guyer expects that this
year's event will add
$400,000 to JARC's coffers.
Last year, the group raised
$330,000.
Perlman's Detroit appear-
ance is part of a Midwest
swing. The violinist says he
usually travels for three or
four days at a time, rather
than stay away from home
for lengthy periods. "I like to
go on little tours, rather than
go on the road for a long
time."Besides the constraints
of Perlman's schedule, JARC
concert organizers had to
work within other scheduling
limitations in planning Sun-
day's event. "We had to work
within the Allied Jewish
Campaign corridor," Guyer
said, meaning that JARC
doesn't, pursue fund raising
when the Campaign does.
Also, Ford Auditorium's
schedule had to be taken into
account.
Perlman, 41, was born in
Israel and studied at the
Academy of Music in Tel
Aviv and the Juilliard School
in New York. He first played
in Detroit in 1962 at age 17.
What does he see as the
Jewish aspect of his work?
"My music is me, and I'm
Jewish," he answers, but
then elaborates: "Some people
say there's a Jewish soul. I
don't know whether it's true
or not. I certainly hope I have
it," he says and laughs.
"This soul often connotes a
shmaltzy style" he explains,
"a zaftig kind of a way of
playing the fiddle. You may
be Jewish, but still everyone
is an individual.
"If I do have a Jewish as-
pect," he says finally, "it's a
help." ❑
