Riegle To Speak
At Bond Dinner

U.S. Sen. Donald W. Riegle
Jr. of Michigan will be the
keynote speaker at the Israel
Bond tribute dinner honoring
Flint communal leaders
Michael and Natalie Pelavin,
to be held 6 p.m. Nov. 2 at
Beth Israel Congregation,
5240 Calkins Road.
Sen. Riegle has served
Michigan in Congress for 20
years. He is presently in his
second term in the United
States Senate and previously
completed five terms in the
United States House of
Representatives.
Sen. Riegle specializes in
economic and financial policy
issues and the growing im-
pact of the world economy on
American jobs. He is a
member of the Democratic
Conference Working Group
on Trade Policy.
He led the effort in the Se-
nate for the Chrysler Loan
Guarantee legislation, saving
over 200,000 jobs in Michi-
gan. His efforts to secure
Federal Urban • Development
Action Grants (UDAGs) for
Michigan cities has resulted
in nearly $2.8 billion of new
commercial and industrial
investment in more than 50
Michigan cities, creating or
saving almost 700,000 jobs
for Michigan workers. A
booster of Michigan agiicul-
ture and tourism, his strong
support for the environment
earned him the top Senate
rating by the League of Con-
servation voters in 1980 and
again in 1982.
As former chairman and
ranking member of the Se-
nate Subcommittee on Alco-
hol and Drug Abuse, Sen.
Riegle has been a leading
member in the fight against
alcohol and drug abuse and
has spearheaded national ef-
forts in this field.
Riegle was first elected to
Congress at age 28. Now 48
years old, he is currently 41st
in seniority in the U.S. Se-
nate and serves as deputy
whip for his party.
At the dinner, the Pelavins
will receive the State of Is-
rael's "Jerusalem, City of
Peace" Award.
