Rabbi Marc S. Blumenthal
will be formally installed as a
rabbi of Temple Beth El dur-
ing Erev Shabbat and Succot
services at 8:30 p.m. today.
Rabbi Blumenthal has served
the congregation since July.
He joins Rabbi Dannel I.
Schwartz, Beth El's senior
rabbi on the bimah.
Rabbi Gary M. Bretton-
Granatoor, assistant director
of the New York Federation
of Reform Synagogues, a
region of the Union of
America Hebrew Congrega-
tions (UAHC), will install
Rabbi Blumenthal and de-
liver the sermon. Members of
the Temple Beth El Young
People's Society will partici-
pate in the service as well.
Rabbi Blumenthal was or-
dained in June at the Hebrew
Union College-Jewish Insti-
tute of Religion in New York.
While a student, Blumenthal
served congregations in
Brooklyn and Chappaqua,
N.Y., and in New Jersey,
Pennsylvania and Colorado.
He is a former hospital
chaplain at Calvary Hospital
for Advanced Cancer Care
and Misericordia Hospital
Medical Center in New York.
He was program director at
Shwayder Camp in Colorado.
He has taught numerous
courses on Judaism in and
around New York and has
lectured widely on chaplaincy
and pastoral care.
He is a charter member of
the National Committee on
AIDS of the UAHC and
served on the clergy commit-

tee of the Intercommunity
Center for Peace and Justice
in New York.
Rabbi Blumenthal holds an
M.A.H.L. degree from HUC-
JIR and a B.A. degree from
Trinity College, where he
was the President's Fellow in
Religion as well as editor-in-
chief of the college weekly
newspaper. He has resided
and studied in Jerusalem and
in Muenster, West Germany
where he was an American
Field Service exchange stu-
dent.

Synagogue Has
A New Rabbi

Rabbi
Applebaum has assumed the
pulpit at Shaar Hashomayim
Synagogue in Windsor.
Ordained 12 years ago at
Chaim Berlin Seminary,
Rabbi Applebaum continued
with his formal education,
obtaining majors in education
and family and marriage
counseling. He also completed
training in clinical pastoral
education, pastoral counsel-
ing and human relations with
the U.S. Army.
For the past seven years,
Rabbi Applebaum has served
as chaplain in the U.S. Army.
Rabbi Applebaum has done
extensive traveling in
Europe, including Germany
for three years, where he
served the German-Jewish
community.

On Shabbat morning, the
first day of Succot, Rabbi
David A. Nelson and Cyril C.
Servetter, educational direc-
tor, will present consecration
certificates to all of the new
students, grades kindergarten
through five, in the Cong.
Beth Shalom Religious

On the same day, the con-
gregation will observe "New
Member Shabbat," honoring
those who joined the congre-
gation within the last year.
At Saturday morning's serv-
ice new members will be
honored by being called to
the bimah.

Pianist, Violinist
Perform In Concert

Music Study Club of Met-
ropolitan Detroit will present
its Annual Artist Concert on
Oct. 26 at 3 p.m. at Orchestra
Hall.
Pianist Yuvall Fichman
and violinist Ian Swensen
will be the soloists.
Fichman, 21, was born in
Tel Aviv, Israel, and later
moved to Toronto. He won
the 1986 Young Artists In-
ternational Auditions and
many other prestigious
competitions and awards. Fol-
