No Sign Of
Sunken Sub

Jerusalem (JTA) — Israel
and the U.S. announced last
week that a month-long
search for missing Israeli sub-
marine Dakar in Egyptian
coastal waters failed to find
any trace of the undersea
craft and has been called off.
The search was financed by
Israel from U.S. aid funds and
was approved by Egypt after
lengthy negotiations. It
began on September 4 and
was abandoned on October 4.
Although the Egyptians had
allowed 70 days for the under-
taking, the U.S. Navy, with
Israel's concurrence, decided
there was no point to con-
tinue.
The Dakar, a British-built
submarine of World War II
vintage, was purchased by
the Israel Navy in 1967 and
was on her delivery voyage to
Haifa with an Israeli crew of
69 when she disappeared
somewhere in the eastern
Mediterranean. The vessel
was last heard from on
January 25, 1968.

Britons Know
Little Of Israel

Manchester, England (JTA)
— Despite its disproportion-
ately extensive and often
negative coverage in the
British news media, Israel is
not on the minds of the aver-
age citizens of Great Britain.
So contended Michael
Latham, a member of Parli-
ament and chairman of the
all-party British-Israel Par-
liamentary Group (APBIPG).
"Most English people knew
absolutely nothing about Is-
rael and care less," he told a
Zionist get-together.
For those English who do
think about Israel, Latham
said most were more likely to
remember Israeli actions of
heroism such as the Entebbe
airport raid than less appeal-
ing news.

Anti-Apartheid
Project Begun

New York — A "Prisoner
of Apartheid" project modeled
after the "Prisoner of Con-
science" campaign for Soviet
Jewry has been launched by
the Union of American He-
brew Congregations through
its 800 synagogues to inten-
sify programs by the Reform
Jewish movement in the na-
tional campaign to end apar-
theid in South Africa.
The project will provide
moral and material support
for South African political
prisoners and their families,
according to Albert Vorspan,
senior vice president of the
UAHC and director of its
Commission on Social Action.
