And three weeks ago, he played the entire game in the defensive backfield. "He's a hard hitter, works hard and is a tough tackler," said North Farmington foot- ball coach James O'Leary. "He shows leadership qual- ities and handles himself very well. He plays with a lot of intensity and gives it ev- erything he's got all the time." Demeter is also used as a blocking back for teammate Selzer, who is being recruited by many colleges. "Scott is a very good guy ... I give a good block and get credit for it," said Demeter. "Some- times they key on Scott and I get the ball and go." "Brad is not a jealous per- son," said O'Leary. "He takes pride in what he does. Brad does like to run with the ball." Demeter was used more as a running back last year, but with Selzer on the squad Coach O'Leary had to. make some adjustments. "At first Brad handled the changes rough," explained O'Leary. "But now he has dealt with the situation well." Demeter has also earned the respect of his fellow teammates. He was selected one of the co-captains, along with Matt Garber, before the season began. "I was sur- prised and happy to be selected," said Demeter. "I was not expecting that to happen. Our team is close and we have a lot of great athletes on the team." "I would like to win the league title this year," added Demeter. "My all time dream is to play in the state high school championship game. But my main goal is to give 100 percent each time I play and to do my best every time I'm on the football field." One of Demeter's biggest thrills in his football career occurred when he was in the eighth grade. His team, North Farmington-West Bloomfield Vikings, beat the Southfield Jayhawks who had not lost a game in eight years. The Vikings went on to an undefeated season. His biggest thrill in high school was the victory this year over arch-rival John Glenn. Demeter would like to attend Michigan State Uni- versity next fall, but his foot- ball career may be over at the end of the high school season. "I would like to play football in college, but my size may hurt my chances." said the Farmington Hills resident. "If I get offered a scholarship to play football anywhere, I would jump at the opportunity. But first I would like to finish my final year of high school on a high note." ❑ Three Men Receive Jerusalem Award Eternity Bracelet Eternity Necklace Diamond Studs A gift she will treasure for- ever and ever ...A gift for Eternity GEM/DIAMOND SPECIALIST Established 1919 111011111 COITIFICAll BY DA IN MI NS s ("ALUM* MIN THRUM ii,11111111111111A11, 411118, SIR u ■ 38 Friday, October 17, 1986 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS FINE , New York (JTA) — Luis Alberto Monge, former Presi- dent of Costa Rica, Per Ahlmark, former Deputy Prime Minister of Sweden, and Rabbi Eliahu Essas, a Soviet refusenik now living in Israel, are the co-recipients of the 1986 . $100,000 Defender of Jerusalem Award, it was announced last week by Eryk Spektor, chairman of the Jabotinsky Foundation, sponsor of the prize.
