Edomite Figurine: Proof of
struggle over the Negev.

Tel Aviv — New archeolog-
ical evidence of the struggle
between Judah and Edom in
the 6th Century BCE has
been found at an Edomite
shrine at Horvat Qitmit,
about 10 kilometers south of
Arad in the Negev desert.
The site was discovered in
1979 by a survey team of Tel
Aviv University's Institute of
Archaeology, headed by Dr.
Itzhaq Beit-Arieh.
According to Dr. Beit-
Arieh, the shrine provides
additional archaeological evi-
dence to support biblical
references to the Edomite
conquests of parts of Judah.
Edom was conquered by King
David, around the 10th Cen-
tury BCE. At the time of the
destruction of the First Tem-
ple, Edom took advantage of
Judah's weakness to seize
control of the Negev.
Previous archaeological
finds testified to Edomite
presence in Judah, but the
unearthing of the shrine at
Qitmit shows that the Edo-
mites were actually well-
established in the region.
Many cult objects, includ-
ing incense burners and fig-
ures of clay were found in
and around the three room
rectangular structure that
comprises the shrine. Out-
standing among these were
the clay head of a goddess of
fertility and war, wearing a
three-horned crown. It is the
only clay statue of a deity of
that period found in Israel to
date is presumed to be the
goddess to whom the shrine
was dedicated.
