HMC To Cite
French Village

\ _

The courage of residents of
LeChambon - Sur Lignon,
France, particularly the Rev-
erend Andre Trocme who,
during World War II, in-
spired his village to rescue
persecuted and hunted Jews,
will be recognized with the
Holocaust Memorial Center's
second Righteousness Award
- at its annual dinner Nov. 9.
At the same time, the
HMC will launch a campaign
to make the Hebrew word
and symbol, "Zachor" — re-
member — part of the Jewish
culture.
LeChambon, which saved
3,000 to 5,000 lives, and the
late Rev. Trocme will be cited
at the dinner marking the
HMC's second anniverary,
Nov. 9, at the Westin Hotel
in Detroit.
Accepting the award, will
be the Rev. Trocme's daugh-
ter, Mrs. Nelly Hewett of St.
Paul, Minn. Mrs. Magda
Trocme, Rev. Trocme's wife,
lives in Paris, France but is
unable to attend.
"In the world which at the
time stood silently by, the
Rev. Trocme and his village
were an oasis of mercy, com-
passion and courage," said
Rabbi Charles Rosenzveig,
founder and director of the
HMC. "Their actions which,
at the time, saved thousands
of Jews, still stand as sym-
bols of the goodness of man-
kind and are a stark contrast
to the evil of the Holocaust."
Samuel Frankel is chair-
man of the second anniver-
sary dinner, which will also
launch the "Zachor" cam-
paign. "We want the symbol
Zachor to be worn by Jews
around the world as much as
they presently wear the Star
of David and the chai (life),"
said Rabbi Rosenzveig.
The campaign is being
planned by a committee of
communication professionals
under the chairmanship of
Berl Falbaum. "We believe it
is essential that Jews and
non-Jews alike never forget
the Holocaust and its mean-
ing," said Falbaum. "We be-
lieve this is an important and
meaningful way of assuring
that objective. What's more,
we are saying that we must
not only remember the past,
but also remember the pre-
sent and what could happen
in the future.
"Our hope is that non-Jews
also will join us in this effort
because, unfortunately, there
are many other people who
have much to remember,"
said Falbaum. "This is a uni-
versal effort but, of course,
focuses around Jews given
the unfortunate and unique
nature of the Holocaust."
