tary film shown to all visitors
in Maidanek. The documen-
tary film was produced right
after the end of World War II
... There are scenes from a
mass memorial service,
attended by thousands of
Poles, especially priests and
nuns with large crosses. Con-
spicuously absent was any
kind of representation of the
Jewish community; and even
worse, not a single word was
mentioned during the entire
documentary, that Jews had
been killed in Maidanek
The other issue of deep
concern to survivors, is our
visit to the only remaining
Jewish cemetery in Warsaw.
The guide led us to an empty
space, overgrown and com-
pletely unmarked, and asked
if we knew where we were
standing. He proceeded to tell
us that this is the site of the .
mass grave of the Warsaw
Ghetto, where tens of
thousands of Jews were
buried.
Naturally, everyone in our
group jumped off the site and
was overcome with sorrow
and horror. The general feel-
ing was, however, that it is
the moral duty of the Polish
government as well as the
world Jewish community to
care for that site and put up
some marker and a sort of
fence or something, as one
might care for a single grave.
There is a real need to
mark that mass grave prop-
erly not only to honor the
nameless dead victims but to
leave an accounting of their
immense suffering for post-
erity. For, as time goes by,
there is a tendency to doubt .
the historical accounts of the
Holocaust and only such
physical reminders will serve
to document the horror that
was perpetrated ...
Orthodox Rabbis'
Lawyer Replies
An article by Rabbi Jack
Goldman ("Goldman's Re-
sponse," Oct. 3) attributed
comments to me with regard
to the dispute involving the
kosher butchers, the Council
of Orthodox Rabbis and now,
seemingly as an ad hoc com-
batant, Rabbi Jack Goldman.
His comments, as they re-
garded my conversation with
him, were false and untrue.
As one of the attorneys re-
presenting the Council of Or-
thodox Rabbis, I have had the
opportunity to discuss the
matter with Leib Steinmetz. I
know him to be a man of in-
tegrity and honesty in all
matters. Most certainly, in
matters of kashrut, his opin-
ion and observations are be-
yond question. I do not know
why Rabbi Goldman made
any reference to me at all. I
do not appreciate comments
that misstate my position or
those of my clients ...

An exam scheduled for
Monday, Yom Kippur, in
University of Michigan Prof.
Kenneth Lieberthal's Politi-
cal Science 160 class has
been resheduled.
"The exam will be given
Wednesday, not Monday,"
said the Professor, who is
Jewish.
A story in the Oct. 3 issue
of the Michigan Daily, which
reported that Lieberthal
would not change the
scheduled test, "was accurate
until a month ago," when the
test date was moved.
"I don't lecture on Yom
Kippur," Lieberthal contin-
ued. A colleague will fill the
Monday slot, he said. Mate-
rial covered on that day will
not appear on Wednesday's
exam.
