Yosef Yaacov, consul gen-
eral of Israel and minister
counselor for the Israel Em-
bassy, will be the keynote
speaker at the 38th annual
dinner of the Detroit chapter,.
American Society for
Technion-Israel Institute of
Technology, 6:15 p.m. Oct. 30
at Adat Shalom Synagogue.
Born in Shanghai, China,
Yaacov is of the fourth gen-
eration of Chinese Jews who
came to Shanghai from Iraq
in the 19th Century. His fam-
ily, like the Kadooris and the
Sasoons, established the
Jewish community in China,
which later absorbed and
helped many of the German
Jewish refugees who fled
from Germany to Shanghai
in the 1930s.
Yaakov attended a British
school, commenced law
studies which were inter-
rupted by the Japanese occu-
pation, was a news corre-
spondent for UPI during
Chinese Civil War, and
broadcaster at the American
radio station in the Far East.
He immigrated to Israel
during the War of Indepen-
dence, served 2Y2 years in the
Israel Defense Forces, and
entered government service.
In 1958 he received a UN-
ESCO fellowship in overseas
broadcasting.
In 1971, he was appointed
counselor at the Israel Em-
bassy, Ottawa, Canada and
was subsequently counselor
at the Israel Embassy in
London.
Yaakov was appointed
consul-general at Washington
in September 1983.
