"They're all fun. They're all different, which is why they're all fun and I like bouncing from one to an- other." And bounce he does. On Broadway, he has ap- peared in a variety of musi- cals including The Nervous Set, Darling of the Day, Dear World, Gantry and The Un- known Soldier and His Wife, and off Broadway in 0, Oys- ters. He has appeared in various Los Angeles theater prod- uctions and in Mel Brooks films, such as The Producers, History of the World Part One and To Be Or Not To Be. He also was in The Cheap Detec- tive and The Clonus Horror. On television, Kessler has had roles in Alice, Fernwood 2 Night, Sunset- Limousine, Simon and Simon and others. His operatic experiences in- clude Falstaff and The Merry Widow. In addition, he does voices for cartoon shows, in- cluding the Smurfs, Snorks and Transformers. Kessler said he has no favorite role — he's done musicals in summer theater for more than 30 years — and would like to direct mus- ical comedies "because I know them so well." "The only way character actors get that (recognition) is to be a reg- ular on a series ... If that happened to me I wouldn't be sorry. That kind of thing — TV — if you can be on a show that's a success for four or five years and can stick with it and be happy doing it that gives you the financial independence to go and work anywhere you want and do anything you want ..." Even without superstar- dom, Kessler seems to be get- ting what he wants — the opportunity to work at what he likes to do — act. That, he said, is the best part of being an actor, doing what one likes to do. "I think that's really the biggest thing be- cause, God knows, the money is on again, off again and sometimes the audiences don't applaud. Sometimes the plays aren't very good. But if I like what I'm doing in the play then it somehow doesn't seem to make too much dif- ference." A bachelor in his 40s, Kes- sler said the demands on his career precluded marriage. Because he is on the road a
