ten to 15 years in the busi-
ness world, were interviewed.
They admitted paying a high
0. price for achieving their
status. They conceded that
they were only accepted up to
a point — and that remain-
ing on the corporate rise is a
giant struggle.
These women said the sac-
rifice that they had to make
juggling their careers and
families was not worth it.
When a woman is on the cor-
porate level, she knows that
she must still go home to be
concerned with dinner, no
- matter how responsibilities
are divided between husband
and wife. What will happen
with a woman congregational
rabbi? Do you hesitate to call
her male counterpart at 8
a.m. or 11 p.m.? But how
about a woman rabbi who
has young children or a
baby? Would you call her
very early or very late?
I respect and encourage
women who aspire to leader-
ship roles in Jewish life, be-
lieving everyone should have
an equal opportunity. Given
the opportunity, women can
be a key influence in the up-
grading of Jewish education,
strengthening family life and
making an impact on world
questions such as nuclear
disarmament and world
peace.

I wish to add a closing vig-
nette to your fine story about
Harriette Lieberman Simons
("Purely Commentary," Sept.
26).
As your readers undoub-
tedly know, Leonard Simons
has collected books through-
out his lifetime with a pas-
sion matched only by his
generosity in giving them
away. Harriette shared this
interest. In one of her final
acts of charity shortly before
her death, Harriette decided
to give to me one of the price-
less works from their collec-
tion. A tiny volume, Love of
Jesus, printed in 1677, it was
a stunningly thoughtful gift
for the president of a Catholic
college.
Among his many civic con-
tributions, Leonard Simons
served on the original Board
of Lay Trustees when Maryg-
rove College first began to
broaden its governance
structure two decades ago. He
helped lead a fund drive at
that time to build an addition
to our library. Leonard has
remained interested in
Marygrove to this day as we
seek to educate Detroit's
leaders for the 21st century.
I admire Leonard Simons'
dedication to so many and
varied worthwhile causes, I
value his advice, and I share
his grief over the loss of his
lifetime companion.

Errors In Fact
Must Be Answered
It is a matter of concern
that Betsy Barlow's errors of
fact were permitted to go un-
answered.
In her letter (Sept. 19), she
states, "As more and more
land is taken from these
Palestinians, and more
Jewish settlers build on the
land in what was designated
to be the Arab state ..."' she
mouths the lie, so often re-
peated, that is accepted as
fact by the unknowledgeable.
The Arab state is Jordan,
which was given all of the
land east of the river; the
small area between the Jor-
dan River and the Mediter-
ranean Sea was parcelled out
as the Jewish Homeland.
The attacking Arab armies
violated this in 1948-1949.
The 1949 armistice line was
never intended as an accept-
able border, as Lord Caradon
stated on public television
some years ago. The so-called
"West Bank and Jerusalem"

Women are considerably
more sensitive to family life
than men, and this includes
Jewish education. The men
who run our congregations
are too often preoccupied
with budgeting, always look-
ing how to "cut back." Yet,
when religious school
teachers' salaries suffer, so do
our children. Paradoxically,
the men will not "blink an
eye" at spending $25 or more
per hour for their child's
music lesson.
I believe, too, that women
will move quickly respond to
the influence of their young
adult children than will men.
My generation grew up with
grandiose synagogue edifices.
Today's parents of young
children want the synagogue
to be serviceable and practi-
cal, but do not see the need
for large, luxurious buildings
that often place high finan-
cial constraints on the syna-
gogue budget, thereby caus-
ing continuous increase in
dues.
The future of women in
Jewish life represents a half-
full glass, rather than half-
empty. Our Jewish women
have magnificent and ex-
traordinary talent, but to
achieve our status success,
we are going to have to work
extra hard and apply that
extra bit of energy and zest.
