PLO Activities
In U.S. Probed

New York (JTA) — Attor-
ney General Edwin Mease
told the Conference of
Presidents of Major American
Jewish Organizations that
the Justice Department was
"looking very carefully" into
the activities of the PLO
office in Washington and
hinted that the office might
be closed down.
Responding to a question
following an address to the
conference, Meese said the
department was "taking cer-
tain steps to see if there was
any violation of law" in the
PLO's activities in Washing-
ton. He added: "We will not
allow that office to aid ter-
rorists or to be a source of
support for terrorists any-
where." The attorney general
said there were "sensitive as-
pects" to the situation that he
said "may affect actions we
may take." The PLO was
permitted to open a so-called
information office in Wash-
ington during the Carter
Administration.

New York (JTA) — The
calm ambience of Mattoon, a
central Illinois community of
about 19,000 people, is ap-
parently back to normal, fol-
lowing a brief disturbance
one morning last July.
The Canadian Jews News
reports that Kraft, Inc. cele-
brated the opening at its
Mattoon factory of a Lender's
Bagel Bakery line by inviting
the entire town to a five- -
block-long bagel breakfast in
the middle of the main street.
Half the town showed up to
eat 21,000 bagels and other
Kraft products, according to
Mary Agnes Welsh of Kraft.
The bagels were not toasted,
she said.

Japan Seeks
Trade Links

Jerusalem
(JTA)
Shinichi Yanai, the deputy
foreign minister of Japan,
said that his country would
welcome increased and diver-
sified imports from Israel. He
spoke at a meeting with Is-
raeli Deputy Foreign Minis-
ter Ronni Milo, who said his
guest's remarks were a posit-
ive development in trade re-
lations between the two coun-
tries.
Japan, which exports ev-
erything from cars to mic-
rochips all over the world,
has kept a low profile with
respect to trade with Israel.
It is heavily dependent on
Middle East oil. Yanai said,
however, that Japan looks
with favor on the efforts of
some of its large trading
companies to help Israeli
companies find local partners
for joint industrial ventures.

Mr. and Mrs. Allen Charlupski hosted a leadership reception at Tam
O'Shanter Country Club in advance of the October 21 Magen David
Adorn (Israel's Emergency Medical, Ambulance and Blood Service) tes-
timonial dinner honoring Donald and Nancy Fox.

The Charlupskis, natives of Poland and survivors of the Holocaust con-
tinue to be active on behalf of numerous philanthropic, cultural and
educational causes locally and in Israel. They are past recipients of the
Distinguished Humanitarian Service Award of the American Red Magen
David for Israel and contributed a fully equipped Mobile Intensive Care
Unit in memory of their parents. Charlupskis serve on the board of direc-
tors of Michigan Region ARMDI and recently sponsored a Paramedics
Training Scholarship.

Dr. Morris Starkman, chairman of Medical-Dental Council chaired the
reception and an effective appeal was made by Max Sosin, a commu-
nity leader and a staunch supporter of Mogen David Adorn.

The major gifts included a contribution of a Mobile Intensive Care Unit
(anonymous); a fully equipped ambulance by Grant and Betty Silverfarb
in memory of their parents; another conventional ambulance donated,
anonymously by two families also in memory of their families perished
during the Holocaust; Paramedics Training Scholarship by the honorees,
Donald and Nancy Foz; another Paramedics Training Scholarship do-
nated by Miriam Hamburger in memory of her husband, Samuel Ham-
burger.

Dr. John J. Momes, chairman of the Michigan Region stated that the
leadership reception produced an excellent base for the testimonial
dinner.
