/- 'Three Rivers was defeated in
\_ the primaries after charging
/- that an opponent was in
•-, league with the devil.
/-- Sen. Riegle voiced his fears
of what would happen to
America if Pat Robertson, the
evangelist, became President.
His talk was an informal
overview of recent events,
chief of which, he said, was
his belief that "there is
enormous pressure building
to reduce foreign aid next
year." Stressing that he has
been a strong proponent of
aid for Israel for the last 20
years in Congress, he urged
supporters of Israel to
counter the budget pressures
through "a solid coalition ef-
> fort on all of our parts."
Riegle mentioned that he is
`,--- in line to succeed Sen. Rus-
sell Long, who is retiring, on
the Senate Finance Commit-
tee.
[ -. The veteran Senator gave
high marks to Shimon Peres
for his peace efforts as prime
minister of Israel and said he
• hoped "we won't lose momen-
tum" when Yitzhak Shamir
takes over next week.
Rep. Sander Levin, who
\
preceded his brother to the
podium, emphasized that "Is-
rael stands on firmer ground
in the U.S. Congress today
than ever before," a fact that
\ he attributed in part to
' strong participation among
American Jews in the politi-
cal arena. He, too, spoke of
\_ the "growing discomfort with
/-
1 those who speak for God and
who claim to know who the
devil is. We must stand up
and reject the minority in
this country who say they
have The Message, and we
must fight to keep America a
›-, pluralistic society."
The -messages the partici-
pants heard from their repre-
sentatives were heard as well
/ ---. during their visit to the Is-
\
raeli Embassy from Counsel
Yosef Yaakov and at the
Capitol from AIPAC repre-
sentative Dr. Ralph
1 Nurnburger. Yaakov spoke of
) the strides Israel has made of
late in improving the pros-
pects for peace and the need
for continued lobbying for
foreign aid. Nurnberger of-
fered a rundown-of some of
the key political races around
the country coming up next
month, noting that "while I
\ -, don't know if the Republicans
/
will
i keep control of the Se-
nate, I can tell you that the
elections will definitely show
• a net gain for Israel." He ex-
'
plained that four incumbents
are retiring and all eight of
/
the candidates vying for
/- those four spots have better
positions on Israel.
Nurnberger also acknowl-
edged that "the touchiest
issue facing the American
Jewish community in poli-
tics" is whether to focus on a
single issue (Israel) or not. Of
\-, the approximately 70 Jewish
/-
PACs now operating in the
/ ).., U.S., only a handful are
multi-issue groups.
