Of Harvard Row

with treason in 1967 for help-
ing to establish the All-
Russian Social Christian Al-
liance for the Liberation of
the People. His 20-year term
in prison and internal exile
ends in February, but human
rights activists fear the
Soviets will continue to - de-
tain him. He has relatives in
the Washington, D.C. area
who have requested his emig-
ration.
Riegle sponsored a Senate
resolution in Ogurtsov's be-
half two years ago and
Broomfield sponsored a
House resolution last year.
The Riegle-Broomfield let-
ter to Reagan concluded that
"relations (between the U.S.
and USSR) could never be
normalized without resolu-
tion of the many human
rights cases facing the Soviet
Union. We urge that you
reinforce that message and
seek a quick resolution" to
the cases during the meetings
with Gorbachev.
On Wednesday, former De-
troiter Simon Levin (Simon
Lifshits) met his wife and
eight-year-old son in Vienna.
The family was one of 14 that
were on a list compiled by
Broomfield and Rep. Dante
Fascell (D-Fla.), and pre-
sented to Gorbachev last
winter.
Levin now lives in the
Chicago area and his family
is believed to be the first
from the Broomfield-Fascell
list to be reunited.

Awareness
Week Planned

The official opening of The
Neighborhood Project will be
observed with the proclama-
tion of "Neighborhood
Awareness Week" by the
mayors of Oak Park and
Southfield, Oct. 18-26.
A series of activities is
planned that week, including
the dedication of Neighbor-
hood Project offices at the
Jewish Community Center
Jimmy Prentis Morris
Branch.
Mayors Charlotte Rothstein
of Oak Park and Donald
Fracassi of Southfield have
endorsed the program, which
is designed to enhance and
strengthen the quality of life
by offering housing incen-
tives to Jewish persons and
promoting community spirit
and involvement.
The Jewish Welfare Feder-
ation, which is coordinating
the program, recently an-
nounced the creation of
interest-free incentive loans
to encourage home buyers to
locate and remain in
neighborhoods within Oak
Park and Southfield. The
particular vitality of Jewish
life in those communities
centers around synagogues,
Jewish agencies, schools and
other institutions which . pro-
