(C IU 1 11) REGULAR HOURS ENTERTAINMENT MON.-SAT. 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. CLOSED MON., OCT. 13 /--' Hamlisch Continued from Page 93 more than a famous signa- ture tune for Chorus Line; it served as Hamlisch's personal signature too. He surrounds himself with those who share the same gut-wrenching love, serving as musical consultant for such stars as Joel Grey, Ann-Margaret and Liza Min- nelli, for whom he wrote songs while both were in high school. But by high school, he was an old pro. A 7-year-old Ham- lisch was already studying at the Juilliard School of Music — the internationally re- spected school's youngest stu- dent ever. It has been a career of firsts — in 1974, Hamlisch was the first person ever to be given three Academy Awards during one presenta- tion (the Sting and The Way We Were). And he may be the first to have composed the score for a show based on his relationship with a lyricist (They're Playing Our Song, Carol Bayer Sager). And then there was Chorus Line, which greeted Hamlisch with a chorus of huzzahs. The show, evolving through work- shops at the New York Shakespeare Festival, evolved into the longest- running show on Broadway. It is still dancing its heart out at the Shubert Theatre on Broadway. As wonderful an experience as it was to compose Chorus \/-J Line, "I don't think anything can change my life," says Hamlisch. "It helps maybe in that I go to a restaurant and can get a good table. But, in my actual life, no — I don't think it can change that much. "I'm still pretty much the same, with the same apart- ment, the same station wa- gon. I like the simple things in life: there's no necessity to go grand. I consider doing a show as an expanded version of inviting guests to my liv- ing room for a party." Nu, Bessie? You were right. As hamisch as ever.
