Court Petitioned
On Rights Case
New York — The Anti-
Defamation League of B'nai
B'rith urged the U.S. Sup-
reme Court to review a case
involving a Maryland
synagogue. The synagogue
was denied protection under
a federal civil rights statute
on the ground that it only
applies to members of a
non-white race.
In an amicus curiae (friend
of the court) brief filed to-
gether with the NAACP
Legal Defense and Education
Fund, the International Net-
work of Children of Jewish
Holocaust Survivors and the
American Gathering and
Federation of Jewish
Holocaust Survivors, the
ADL asked the high court to
overrule a decision of the
Fourth Circuit Court of Ap-
peals in Richmond, Va. in a
case involving Cong. Shaare
Tefila in Silver Spring, Md.
The congregation initiated
legal proceedings against the
individuals who in 1982 de-
secrated the synagogue with
swastikas, Ku Klux Klan
symbols and anti-Semitic slo-
gans.
The appellate ruling up-
held a federal district court
decision that attacks on
Jewish property do not fall
within the scope of the Civil
Rights Act adopted in 1866
after the Civil War.
Michael E. Schultz, chair-
man of ADL's national civil
rights _committee, said that
"although the league rejects
the notion that Jews should
be classified as a race, the
civil rights statute must be
construed to cover acts of ra-
cism directed toward Jews ...
The statute was meant to
protect against all racially-
motivated violations of civil
rights."

New York — Pamela Sue
Robertson, of Richmond,
Mich., will be a Raoul Wal-
lenberg Scholar at the He-
brew University of Jerusalem
this fall.
The new program, which
will be held at the Univer-

Overseas Students, was
created in memory of the
Swedish diplomat who de-
voted himself to the rescue of
Jews from the Nazis.
The Wallenberg Program
will offer small tutorials,
seminars and personal meet-
ings with Israel's statesmen
and leaders. The program
will require the Wallenberg
Scholars, who have been cho-
sen for their high academic
qualifications, to do ongoing
comprehensive research on
topics related to issues of
leadership within democ-
racies.
