freedom of the 100,000 Jews
in Jerusalem.
The road served for a
further six months as the
main artery to Jerusalem be-
fore a new route was blazed
from Ramla to the Shimshon
Junction and around to
Sha'ar Hagai. The track that
Tepper, Mundlak and Ish-
Shalom discovered became
known as the Burma Road,
because some of the foreign
war correspondents who had
been in the Far East during
the Second World War com-
pared the road which relieved
Jerusalem with the one
which the Allies had built
linking India with China.
The comparison owed much
to journalistic sensationalism.
Hikers who today search out
the newly restored Burma
Road will be disappointed
that it is only a modest track
running through attractive
woodlands and groves. Never-
theless, it was a vital lifeline
which, combined with the
bravery of the three men,
saved thousands of lives and
enabled Jerusalem to become
the capital of the newly-born
Jewish State.

Soviet Bloc
To Be Pressed
On Human Rights
Washington (JTA) — The
United States and its West
European allies will press the
Soviet bloc on human rights
- in a conference that opened in
Vienna last week, the State
Department said.
The U.S., Canada and 33
European nations are meet-
ing in Vienna for two weeks to
\
prepare for a followup on the
1 1975
. Helsinki Accords in
Vienna on Nov. 4. The follow-
up and a conference which
ended in Stockholm recently
were scheduled at the end of
the Helsink review conference
in Madrid in 1983.

"The U.S. and its allies will
'
seek improved compliance by
the East with all the prin-
ciples
„ of Helsinki and Ma-
drid, State Department
deputy spokesman Charles
Redman said.
He said at the meeting the
1 ‘ West will seek an agenda for
the Nov. 4 meeting that will
address the full range of
issues covered by the Helsinki
Act "which represents a
framework for seeking to
'
resolve the humanitarian,
economic and security issues
that divide Europe.”
/- Redman said the Stock-
holm conference was an in-
tegral part of the broader pro-
cess which "recogonizes the
interrealtionship between
peace and freedom in Eur-
ope." At Stockholm, an agree-
• ment was reached for ex-
changes of information about
military exercises and for in-
spection of troop movements
between NATO and Warsaw
Pact countries.
