Agritech Fair
Draws 4,000

Tel Aviv (JTA) — More
than 4,000 foreign "visitors
attended Agritech-86, the
week-long exhibition of Is-
raeli agricultural technology
at the Tel Aviv Fairgrounds.
According to the organiz-
ers, the attendance was dou-
ble the number expected, and
many orders were placed for
Israeli agricultural equip-
ment by representatives of
Asian, African and Eastern
European countries with
which Israel has no diploma-
tic ties. About 20 percent of
the overseas buyers were
from Spain, which estab-
lished diplomatic relations
with Israel early this year.
• But the highlight of the
event was the agreement be-
tween an Israeli firm man-
ufacturing irrigation equip-
ment and the Chinese Na-
tional Institute for Agricul-
tural Research for the Is-
raelis to build a five acre
permanent model exhibit in
Beijing.

Congo Retracts
Statement

New York (JTA) — The
People's Republic of Congo
has apologized for remarks by
its foreign minister alleging a
resemblance between Israel,
South Africa and Nazi Ger-
many. The apology was sent
to the U.S. Representative - to
the United Nations, Vernon
–i Walters, who had lodged a
strong protest against the
analogy.
Walters reacted to a speech
by Foreign Minister Antoine
Ndinga Oba to the General
Assembly on South Africa's
continued occupation of
Namibia (Southwest Africa),
in the course of which Oba
said South Africa resembled
no other state of modern
times unless it was Israel or
Nazi Germany. Israel and
Congo have no diplomatic re-
lations.

Attempts
Himalayas

Aviv (JTA) — The first
attempt to climb a Himalay-
an mountain by a team of
Israeli mountain climbers is
due to get under way shortly,

following the receipt of per-
mission from the Nepal gov-
ernment in Katmandu.
An eight-member team led
by Doron Erel, 27, a geologist
from Givataim near Thl Aviv,
will try the ascent of Mount
Kangchutse, also known as
Makalu 11, about 28,000 feet
high, in the northeast of
Nepal and only slightly lower
than Mount Everest.
The Nepalese Ministry of
Iburism said the Israelis had
already arrived in the region.
