will take testimony abroad
from an 80-year old former SS
guard who served at Tre-
blinka. Because of the impor-
tance of positive identifica-
tion, witnesses asked to iden-
tify the prisoner will be
limited to persons who knew
"Ivan the Terrible" for at
least eight months.
The charge sheet lacks
some vital evidence. Still
missing from the file is a cer-
tificate reportedly issued to
Demjanjuk at an SS training
camp. It is believed to be in
the possession of the Soviet
authorities. They have not yet
responded to an Israeli re-
quest for a copy of the
document.
Demjanjuk will be tried by
a panel of one.Supreme Court
justice and two district court
justices. Their names will be
announced after the charge
sheet is filed.
Amal Refuses
Israeli Offer
In Lebanon
ml Aviv (JTA) — Israel
recently offered to hand over
to the Lebanese Shiite Amal
organization parts of the
security zone in south Leb-
anon if Amal could show it
was capable of maintaining
quiet in the region. Defense
Minister Yitzhak Rabin
disclosed in an interview last
week in Yediot Acharanot
newspaper that Israel made
the offer to Amal leader Nab-
bi Beni in Beirut through the
good offices of U.S. and UN
officials.
But Beni responded by say-
ing, "Get out of the area first,
and then we shall see," Rabin
said.
The idea was for the Israel
Defense Force to give ter-
ritory to Amal in stages if,
say, there was quiet in any
particular region for half a
year.
Amal would have to prove
that it could maintain order
in the area it took over and
prevent the firing of katyusha
rockets and other hostile ac-
tivities against Israel. The
role of the South Lebanon Ar-
my, generally regarded as an
Israeli surrogate, is unclear
under such a plan.
Ministers Meet
New York (JTA) — Israel
Foreign Minister Yitzhak
Shamir met with Ivory Coast
Foreign Minister Simeon Ake
and asked him to intervene
with other African countries
to recognize Israel. It was the
first meeting between the two
foreign ministers since both
countries formally resumed
diplomatic ties last week
when Ivory Coast reopened
its embassy in Jerusalem.
