has been a refusenik longer
than any other.
Graham does not believe
Bogomolny and Heifitz's re-
lease is connected to the deal
made to free American jour-
nalist Nicholas Daniloff.
Rather, their release, and the
rumored release of refuseniks
Naum and Inna Meiman
were arranged to give the

Soviets "a little pre-summit
publicity."
Both Inna Meiman and
Heifitz are dying of cancer,
Graham said.
Bogomolny and Heifitz
were first visited by. De-
troiters Joel Gershenson and
Larry Jackier in 1980. In
subsequent years, other De-
troiters visited the couple,
who were very isolated, ac-
cording to Graham.
Upon their release, the
couple will reside in Israel
where Bogomolny's parents
and sisters live.

Mental Facility Agrees
To Shabbat Services

DAVID HOLZEL

Staff Writer

T

he controversy over
the denial of Shabbat
services to Jewish
patients at the Northville
Regional Psychiatric Hospital
appears to be over.
At a meeting on Sept. 17,
Dr. Walter Brown, director of
NRPH, agreed to allow those
Jewish patients who are will-
ing and able, to attend Fri-
day night services at the
Livonia Jewish Congregation.
In addition, he agreed to pro-
vide a driver and transporta-
tion to and from the
synagogue, plus one staff
attendant.
Rabbi Martin Gordon of
LJC, the contracted Jewish
chaplain at the Northville
facility, agreed to provide a
volunteer to augment the
hospital personnel.
Not all the agreement's
technicalities have been
ironed out, however. How
volunteers will be recruited
and trained "is something we
need to figure out," said Be-
rnie Elbinger, a volunteer
who works with NRPH's
Jewish patients.

Elbinger said that he and
Rabbi Gordon will work
towards an answer to this
question with Northville's
administration and the
Michigan Protection and Ad-
vocacy Service, a watchdog
organization over the state's
mental health facilities.
Despite the incomplete ar-
rangements, the off-grounds
services resumed Sept. 19.
"The Jewish community
will be gaining something as
well as giving something" by
providing volunteers to ac-
company the Jewish patients,
Elbinger emphasized. Those
trained now will be able to
serve the community in the
future, he said.
"What we're doing here
will set the model for other
institutions and other per-
suasions," he went on to say.
"Jews are supposed to be a
light unto the nations,
right?"

"It seems as though we've
worked things out satisfactor-
ily," Dr. Brown said of the
agreement.
In reversing his decision to
forbid his Jewish patients
from leaving the hospital's
grounds for Shabbat services,
Dr. Brown was following a
directive issued Sept. 17 by
Diana Censoni, director of
Michigan's Bureau of Mental
Health Facilities for Children
and Adults.
". . . given that the Jewish
faith requires worship serv-
ices on the Sabbath which is
Friday evenings (sic) and the
fact that it is doubtful that a
rabbi would be available to
provide Friday night services
at NRPH to a male quorum,
alternative arrangements are
required ..." the directive
read in part.
According to Rabbi Gordon,
Elbinger will arrange for
non-Friday night High Holi-
day services to be held at the
hospital.
There are six Jewish
patients at NRPH. Two have
expressed a desire to attend
Shabbat services.
According to Elbinger, the
dispute is "a symptom of a
much deeper problem: the
mismanagement of the chap-
laincy."
At a meeting to be held
Monday, Elbinger plans to
attempt to further separate
Chief Chaplain Father Stan-
ley Kukulski, a Catholic
priest, from the hospital's
Jews. Dr. Brown recently
agreed to remove the Jewish
chaplaincy from Father
Kukulski's auspices and place
it under his own. Elbinger
charges that the priest is still
being consulted by the hospi-
tal administration on issues
pertaining to Jewish patients.
