Israel Welcomes
Italy's Stance
On Terrorism
New York (JTA) — Israeli
Foreign Minister Yitzhak
Shamir, in a meeting last
week with Italian Foreign
Minister Julio Andreotti, said
Israel welcomes Italy's tough
stance on terrorism and in-
vited Italy to cooperate with
Israel in all aspects of the
fight against terrorism.
Shamir's spokesman, Avi
Posner, said Andreotti told
Shamir that he feared the ter-
ror now striking France
would spread to Italy.
Andreotti also said he
thinks Italy went in the right
direction by taking stronger
measures against terrorism,
Posner said. Andreotti also
said the Italians had learned
something from the Israelis
in dealing with terrorists.
In another meeting with
Ivory Coast Foreign Minister
Simeon Ake, the first open
meeting between officials of
the two countries, Shamir
asked Ake to invervene with
other African countries to en-
courage recognition of Israel.
Shamir told Ake that Israel
is ready to increase aid to
Ivory Coast, which Israel
believes is one of the most im-
portant African countries.
lb date, Israel has provided
only agricultural and medical
assistance of Ivory Coast, but
Shamir indicated that Israel
is now willing to provide
other types of unspecified
assistance.

Israel Hits
Terrorist Bases
Aviv (JTA) — Israel Air
Force jets attacked terrorist
targets in Lebanon south of
Beirut last week and returned
safely to their bases, a
military spokesman said. He
said all of the bases hit were
on mountain tops away from
populated areas. They re-
portedly included head-
quarters and staging areas of
the Popular Front Organiza-
tion and buildings that hous-
ed a unit of the Abu Moussa
faction of the Palestine
Liberation Organization.
Beirut Radio reported that
the targets were near Bais-
sour, Aidat, Khaifun, Shim-
\ lan and Aramon and that the
attacks left them ablaze.
There was apparently no
direct connection between the
air raids and recent attacks in
: south Lebanon on the French
contingent of the United Na-
/
tions Interim Force in Leb-
anon (UNIFIL) and the
Israel-backed South Lebanon
Army (SLA).
Security sources in Sidon
said that many villagers
north of the south Lebanon
security zone were fleeing the
area following heavy artillery
bombardments by the SLA.
The shelling was aimed at
several villages northeast of
Nabatiya.
