lease, withdrew from the
headlines, but her devoted
and persistent efforts in his
behalf have not been forgot-
ten.
Avraham Shalom, head of
the General Security Service
of Israel (the Shin Bet) found
himself the center of a public
scandal when it was revealed
that two Arab terrorists, ap-
prehended during their mur-
derous hijacking of a bus in
Israel, had been killed after
their capture. Public indigna-
tion was stimulated against
the fact that the secret serv-
ice operatives had at first de-
nied the facts and had sought
to cover up. Shalom and his
colleagues were pardoned by
President Herzog before
being tried.
Kurt Waldheim made
headlines in Israel as he ran
for election as president of
Austria, despite mounting
evidence both of his partici-
pation in Nazi war crimes as
well as his attempts to con-
ceal that past. Indignation in
Israel not withstanding, the
Austrian electorate gave him
a vote of confidence.
Chava Yaari, wife of one
of Israel TV's most popular
news commentators, was ac-
cused of the murder of a
woman in Tel Aviv to cover
up alleged thefts of money.
The case was marked by ex-
tensive press coverage and
emotionally charged scenes.
And for those with long
memories, the following are
the ten names which made
the list last year. How many
do you remember? David
Balas, Ruth Davidov, Abdel
Wahab Darousha, Mrs.
Miriam Groff, Pinhas Groob,
Hadas Kedmi, Rabbi Yitzhak
Peretz, Moshe Shahal, Dr.
Avraham Suhami and Yit-
zhak Tunik.
Israel Invites
Hassan To Play
Key Confab Role
Jerusalem (JTA) — Moroc-
co could play a key role both
in a Mideast peace conference
and a preparatory committee
that would create such a con-
ference. This was a proposal
put to King Hassan of Moroc-
co last week by leading Labor
Party Knesset member Ra-
fael Edri.
Edri met with the King,
alone, for close to an hour and
delivered a message from
Prime Minister Shimon Peres.
Returning to Israel via
Paris, Edri said his meeting
was itself proof that the
Hassan-Peres summit in July
had not been barren, as some
critics both in Israel and in
the Arab world had claimed.
He noted that the Monarch
had not rejected the Israeli
proposal and indicated there
would be further discussions
on various levels.
