money to develop more effec-
tive organ transplants while
knowing that this procedure,
expensive in both dollars and
in medical personnel, reaches
a miniscule percentage of the
total population? Is this a fair
allocation of scarce financial
and human resources?
The Jewish community re-
cites the prayer: "Do not cast
us away in our old age, when
our strength fails us. Do not
abandon us!" Yet ageism
often enters into our deci-
sions about who should re-
ceive critically scarce organs
or experimental treatment. Is
this fair?
I strongly believe the
Jewish community has been
passive and negligent in not
actively addressing these
public policy questions. We
are the heirs of nearly 3,500
years of intense and positive
interaction between Jews and
medicine. (My two personal
favorites from that magnifi-
cent tradition are Mar
Samuel, perhaps the greatest
medical practitioner men-
tioned in the Talmud, and
the great doctor-rabbi Moses
Maimonides.)
Two things are absolutely
clear. Advances in medical
technology will continue to
accelerate, presenting us with
many more difficult public
policy questions. And bioethi-
cal questions are simply too
important to be left solely to
the medical profession.

Recognition Before
Reconciliation

The article "Interfaith
Symposium Stresses Recon-
ciliation" (Sept. 26) leaves
one to wonder in which direc-
tion our Jewish religious
leadars. are going. Com-
monalities between Chris-
tians, Jews and Muslims
were presented regarding
same beliefs in the same God,
common semitic beginnings,
and concern for law and ethi-
cal behavior. Law and ethical
behavior was of primary con-
cern to me and probably for
many other Jewish people.
How can law and ethical be-
havior exist on a decent and
respectable basis when the
main tenor of Arab feeling is
the destruction of Israel? Any
reconciliation is out of the
question until the Arabs and
their religious leaders agree
on one basic principal — that
is, the recognition of Israel.
Since the creation of Israel
and even before, Arab leaders
and Arab terrorists have
made life insecure and unsafe
for Jews in particular; and
non-Jews, with their in-
grained terroristic tactics,
