KURT WALDHEIM was elected president of Austria despite — or because of — revelations
made by the World Jewish Congress documenting the former UN Secretary General's Nazi
past. Waldheim vigorously denied the charges and turned his campaign into a referendum on
whether "outsiders" should determine Austrian affairs. He won in a runoff election in
early June.

ANTI APARTHEID efforts increased in the U.S. with
Congress passing strong legislation supporting economic
sanctions. Several national Jewish organizations, including
the American Jewish Congress, National Council of Jewish
Women, and the Union of American Hebrew Congregations,
supported such sanctions.

LAROUCHIES IN ILLINOIS, Janice Hart and Mark
Fairchild, won a shocking victory in the Illinois. Democratic
primary as nominees for secretary of state and lieutenant
governor, respectively. Their victory prompted Democratic
gubernatorial candidate Adlai Stevenson III to run as an
independent and focused negative national attention on their
leader, Lyndon LaRouche.
