THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
United Nations (JTA) —
Egyptian Foreign Minister
Ahmed Esmat Abdel-Meguid
told the General Assembly
that Egypt supports an inter-
national conference on peace
in the Middle East which
would include an equal role
for the Palestine Liberation
Organization.
Meguid said the summit
meeting in Alexandria last
month between Israeli Pre-
mier Shimon Peres and
Egyptian President Hosni
Mubarak was "a step towards
increased flexibility, a deeper
awareness of the centrality of
the Palestinian question and
a key to comprehensive tackl-
ing of the Arab-Israeli con-
flict."
Meguid
supported
"dialogue and negotiation" as
the best means of achieving
peace, but stressed that the
Palestinian question remains
"the crux of the conflict." He
said Egypt is "best equipped"
to represent the Palestinians
as "a direct party to this dis-
pute."
Brigade
To Hold Reunion
Tel Aviv (JTA) — Surviv-
ing veterans of the Interna-
tional Brigade, the army of
vollinteers which fought on
the side of the Spanish Re-
public against the Nazi-
backed rebels under Gen.
Francisco Franco in the
Spanish Civil War of 1936-
39, will gather in Jerusalem
for their 50th anniversary
congress.
The veterans, from 15
countries, will be joined by 60
Israelis who were among the
volunteers from Palestine in
the first effort to stem the
tide of fascism in Europe a
half century ago. According
to Jerusalem-born Salman
Salzman, organizer of the
congress, 300 volunteers from
Palestine fought in Spain, all
of them Jews except three
Arabs and two Armenians.
He said that 20 percent of
the 40,000 volunteers were
Jewish, including members of
the American Abraham Lin-
coln Brigade and the Thael-
man Brigade made up of
German anti-fascists.
