Rabbi Goldberg seems to
feel that by a concoction of
half truths and vivid imagi-
nation, he can camouflage
the whole situation. That is
simply not the case. In his
several conversations with
me, Rabbi Goldberg never
asked me anything about the
Metropolitan Kashruth
Council. I suppose he would
rather let his mind wander to
come to whatever fanciful
conclusions his mind leads
him to.
Now for the facts: The Met-
ropolitan Kashruth Council
was founded under another
name in 1958. At that time,
and for a period of 12 years,
it served as an agency under
the Union of Orthodox
Jewish Congregations of
America. In 1973, it took the
name Michigan Kashruth
Council. Later the same year,
the Orthodox Union asked
the council to disband al-
together and simply become
its representative in the
midwest.
For six years, between
1973 and 1979, the council's
forces lie in abeyance. In
1979, for political reasons,
the union asked the council
to reform and take on its
former status. In 1979, be-
cause so much of the council's
new business was Outside of
Michigan, the council
changed its name to Met-
ropolitan Kashruth Council
of Michigan. The council is
chartered by the State of
Michigan to engage in the
Orthodox rabbinical supervi-
sion of kosher food products.
Its emblem is registered as
an official trademark or serv-
ice mark in the states of
Michigan and Ohio, as well
as in Washington, D.C. for
nationwide use.
At present, the council em-
ploys 12 Orthodox rabbis to
carry out its sacred work. All
the rabbis are paid by the
council. The only unpaid
member of the council is its
chief executive officer, Rabbi
Jack Goldman.
Rabbi Goldberg thinks he
has really hit the final blow
when he asks, "Why was the
Metropolitan Kashruth
Council refused admission to
the Jewish Community
Council?" I wonder what he
thinks is the answer to that
question. He never had
enough courage to put the
question to me directly.
In October of 1984, at the
behest of some members of
the council, I made formal
application to the Jewish
Community Council. I pre-
sented to them the names of
all the rabbis who were the
council's constituents; I also
submitted the names of 60
local members of the council.
They deliberated the question
of our membership for several
months. Finally, they came to
the conclusion that the
Jewish Community Council
was a grouping of local
organizations and since some
