THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

The Probus Club, a local
philanthropic organization of
businessmen and profession-
als, has renewed its financial
support to the Probus Apart-
ment Club, sponsored by the
Jewish Association for Re-
tarded Citizens.
Probus Club President,
Stuart Stone, recently pre-
sented the gift to JARC
executive director, Joyce Kel-
ler.
With the support from Pro-
bus, the JARC Club provides
opportunities for clients of
the. DeRoy Independent
Apartment Program to par-
ticipate in community events.
During the past several
months, the JARC clients

have attended the Holocaust
Memorial Center, an Oak
Park City Council meeting
and a play at the Birming-
ham Theater.

The support will also go to
sponsor the fourth annual
Apartment Club Chanukah
Party, a visit to the Book
Fair at the Jewish Commu-
nity Center and a trip to
Fiddler on the Roof at the
Birmingham Theater.

The JARC DeRoy Indepen-
dent Apartment Program
prepares, places, and super-
vises mentally retarded
adults in their own apart-
ments throughout the com-
munity.

Probus Aids Retarded

Preliminary examination
for Benny Hershkovitz, owner
of B & H Travel in South-
field, was postponed again
this week. The Oakland
County Prosecutor's Office
received requested business
records from B & H Travel,
covering the years 1984-1986,
and is now conducting an
audit of the records.
B & H Travel owner Benny
Hershkovitz has been accused
of withholding $93,000 from
20 couples from Temple Is-
rael last spring after they
cancelled a planned trip to
Israel. In addition, El Al and
other overseas air carriers to
Israel may not have been
paid for airline tickets sold
by B & H, but the only
charges filed against Her-
shkovitz resulted from the

Temple Israel trip.
Assistant prosecutor Allen
Wolf said this week that a
preliminary examination on
the charges will be delayed
until after a county auditor
examines the business re-
cords. We are investigating
a number of complaints,"
Wolf told The Jewish News.
"A number of people have
given him money which they
have lost. Some of these are
travel related, and some may
be investment related."
Wolf declined to speculate
when the investigation would
be completed. 48th District
Court Judge Gus Cifelli
granted Hershkovitz' request
for bond this summer, pend-
ing the preliminary exam.
Hershkovitz is working for
his son in Atlanta, Ga., while
the case is pending.
