of
Shmitta is impossible for the
public as a whole.
How does Shmitta affect
the religious community in
Israel? Throughout the year,
lists of shops appear in news-
papers from whom it is per-
missible to buy fruit and veg-
etables. For many ultra-
Orthodox Jews who do not
accept the heter of selling the
land, there are certain shops
that market only Arab or
ported produce, and the Arab
markets in East Jerusalem,
Jericho and Bethlehem are
thronged throughout the
Shmitta year by those Jews
who will only buy produce
not grown on Jewish soil.
We don't always under-
stand the reasons for the
commandments, but Shmitta
teaches us that the earth be-
longs to God. It also gives
man freedom just to study
Torah, for he is not preoccu-
pied with working the land.
In the words of Rabbi Kook,
"We today are charged with
preserving the memory of the
commandment until the time
is ripe for it to be carried out
with all its minutiae."
