lems generated by the Na- tional Industrial Recovery Act but in Naphtali's trans- formation from an insecure diffident immigrant to a leader in the neighborhood Sephardic community. The universal theme of guilt is the cornerstone of the second short story, Moshe Weller, which demonstrates a typically Jewish method of > .° expiating this most unpleas- ant of human conditions. Once again we find our- selves on the Lower East Side of New York, the time in 1937. Moshe Weller, an um- brella fixer and thinker, has a past that plagues and tor- ments him. He has kept his secret fom his wife, Dvorka, with whom he is very much in love. She does not know that as a child Moshe, swim- ming with his best friend, Yossi Beltzer, witnessed his drowning and is blamed for /' failing to save him. Dvorka is distressed by the nightmares Moshe has re- peatedly over the ten years of their married life. The only other flaw in the marriage is that the couple has been un- able to have a child which they both want. Moshe further torments himself by wondering if he is the cause of their childlessness and as- sumes, if he is, it is punish- `, ment for his not saving Yossi. Gellin takes the reader into the hearts and lives of these simple yet believable char- acters and even gives us a joyous ending to the tale. The author's style in both stories is straight forward and unembellished, suitably matching the simplicity of - the story line itself. While the characters are not heroic /— or the stories memorable, one does get caught up in reading Gellin. With the centennial cele- /D brations honoring the Statue of Liberty fresh in our memories, the theme of these stories becomes all the more /— forceful. There is, however, a timelessness about them too: what I would call a primor- dial quality which for 20th Century Jews makes reading this book a compelling and rewarding experience. Prayer Day Observed New York — The two mil- lion member United Synagogue of American has designated Oct. 25 at the end of Sukkot, as Yom Atzeret L'chaim, to be observed as a day of synagogue attendance and prayer. The Conservative move- ment's innovation is designed to raise the consciousness of Conservative Jews to the growing danger of universal nuclear holocaust, according to Franklin Kreutzer, inter- national president of United Synagogue.
