stead of pistols.
"I'd say it's 85 percent law,
15 percent law enforcement,"
said Tartikoff. "Like Hill
Street, it has several concur-
rent story lines.
St. Elsewhere, a Yuppie
viewer favorite but an overall
ratings disappointment, was
on the critical list againg this
season — although closer to
being a terminal case.
A decision about renewing
the hospital drama "really
did come down to the last,
last minute. In fact, it was all
but canceled. Bu the shows at
the end of last season got bet-
ter and weren't as depress-
ing."
What
brought
St.
Elsewhere back from the
dead? A group of NBC execu-
tives got together to watch a
segment at the end of the
season. "It moved us person-
ally," Tartikoff said.
Being top dog rather than
underdog means the bones
tossed your way are meatier,
Tartikoff willingly acknowl-
edges. Producers and writers
now think more about shar-
ing their ideas and showing
their pilots to NBC than be-
fore.
"But there's more pressure
when you're not the under-
dog; there's pressure to stay
on top on a qualitative level."
Now, others seem to be
borrowing from the
Tartikoff-Tinker philosophy.
"I think ABC will be much
more competitive this year,'
Tartkoff said of last year's
last-place finisher.
"That competition may
make life tougher for me, but
it will make it better for vie-
wers," said Tartikoff.
Tartikoff cites his eclectic
taste — encouraged by his
Jewish upbringing — in help-
ing give focus to his suc-
cessful vision.
"Right now, I am happy to
be in the position I am in,"
he said. "I don't see any
major, pronounced changes,"
either with Tinker's suc-
cessor, Robert Wright, or
with the new network owner,
General Electric, which re-
cently purchased its parent
company RCA.
In an age of computers,
where programs seemingly
can be programmed for suc-
cess, Tartikoff says there is
still much to be said for "gut
instinct." "Miami Vice had
the lowest tested pilot ever to
make the schedule, the same
with Hill Street and Family
Ties. There is something to
be said for following your in-
stinct."
And for modern miracles.
There are some secrets of
success Tartikoff is willing
share. "We had a five-year
plan at the network," he said
"For the first four years, we
played dead." And the fifth
year?
"We got Cosby for Thurs-
day night," says a pleased
Brandon Tartikoff.
