THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Nerenberg's complaints high- light that "something is not kosher in Denmark," and I would suggest that Sinai should do its own investiga- tion rather than rely on an outside source. LOCAL NEWS Council To Present Lazarus Tribute Michael Drissman Committee for the Jewish Idea '86 1/2 TON CARGO VAN TINT, AIR, PWR. STEERING, PWR. BRAKES, AUTO, V6, TILT, GAGES, RALLY WHEELS, CLOTH SEATS STK. # 3305 It was sufficiently embar- rassing when Alvin Kushner, executive director of the Jewish Community Council, demanded of the Episcopal diocese, a disclaimer for Betsy Barlow's WDET attack on Israel ("Radio Caommen- tary Irks JCCouncil," Aug. 29). But even worse, Kushner has publicly displayed incom- petence and ignorance by his refusal to answer Barlow's requests, printed in The Jewish News, for sources and evidence to justify his attacks and accusations of "lies" he made against her ("Letters," Sept. 19). She is entitled to a re- sponse. Kushner writes that we did not "choose to engage in a dialogue, written or otherwise, with Betsy Bar- low." But why does Kushner refuse to talk with her? Can he prove his accusations? Is he capable of debate? Having thrown the stone, he cannot just run away ... Alvin Kushner has re- peatedly shown himself to be incompetent, ignorant, and ineffective. For the $50,000 per year, the Jewish commu- nity deserves a spokesman who can lead, who can speak to the role and vision of Is- rael, who can appear in the media to defend the rights of Jews, and who can write in- telligently on Jewish affairs. If Alvin Kushner will not resign, he should be fired. Sinai's Menu Expensive, Heavy Having just read your arti- cle of Mr. David Nerenberg's complaints about the impro- per handling of the kosher food orders for Sinai Hospital. ("OP Butcher Sues Sinai, Vaad, Kollel," Sept. 19), I felt compelled to add my com- ment. I am in no way in- volved in the purchasing or the arranging of kosher meats, however, several years ago my husband was a patient at Sinai Hospital for three days. The medical serv- ice was excellent and the nurses were sympathetic and available; yet, there was a real problem — from my perspective. The first evening for dinner duck was served. The second evening the entree choice was rib steak, and the final night the kosher menu provided lamp chops. I was appalled! First of all, when a hospital is attempting to maintain a reasonable budget, these hardly seem like appropriate choices. Even more serious, however, is my distress over the lack of poultry or fish. How can a hospital which emphasizes its cardiac pro- gram concentrate its kosher menu on these expensive and heavy meats? It seems to me that Mr. Judy Goldstein The late Jewish American poetess Emma Lazarus will < be remembered in a special musical tribute to be per- formed by Judy Goldstein at the Jewish Community Council's first delegate as- sembly of the 1986-1987 pro- -\ gram season at 8 p.m. Oct. 22, in the auditorium of United Hebrew Schools, 21550 W. 12 Mile Road, Southfield. Lazarus' best known son- net, The New Colossus, was written as an entry to a poetry contest organized by Joseph Pulitzer, owner of The World, a New York City newspaper, to raise money for the Statue of Liberty in 1883. It was first read at a fund- raising event for the statue. Mrs. Goldstein is a bal- ladier of Yiddish, Hebrew, Russian and English folk songs. Leon S. Cohan, serving a second term as council president, will preside over the delegate assembly, which is open to the community and free of charge. Refreshments will be served by the United Hebrew Schools Woman's Auxiliary.
