In your Sept. 5 issue, an
article appeared relating the
experience of a young Jewish
woman and a dating service
("Heavy Handed Search for
Mr. Wonderful") ... The dat-
ing service discouraged her
from joining because she was
overweight.
Although the writer con-
demns "our society and, more
specifically, Jewish society"
for judging people by ex-
teriors rather than their
inner qualities, the thrust of
her discontent was with the
dating service.
In reality, she was a little
confused. On the one hand
she admits "they have to
work with what they get,"
yet she proceeds to say they
"cater" to false values. She
says "that's business," and
then accuses the service of
being concerned only for thin
Jewish women ...
The reality is that a dating
service is a broker between
people. It does not create val-
ues, encourage them, change
them or judge them. If the
people who join want to meet
tall people, the service must
provide them ... And if slim
people are in high demand,
the service must abide by
this demand ...

In their zeal to attract new
members, the Birmingham
Temple and their mentor,
Sherwin T. Wine, advertised;
"Your Jewish identity is
waiting to be developed here"
(Jewish News Sept. 12).
Though their stated commit-
ment to Jewish identity is
laudable I am somewhat con-
fused.
Is this the same Sherwin T.
Wine who previously claimed
to "dissent from the belief
that the primary moral obli-
gation of every Jew is to
promote and sustain Jewish
identity" (Jewish Post and
Opinion June 23, 1972)? Does
this advertisement reflect a
change of heart or is it
merely a new marketing
strategy for our age of
heightened ethnic pride? ...
