I would like to add a couple stories that we Flint "boys" experienced with our hero of the time. At Beth Israel Synagogue in Flint, we had a club of 12 and 13 year old boys, appro- priately called the Bar Mitzvah Club ... We has saved enough moeny to get tickets to a Detroit Tiger game, which we all enjoyed, especially because our hero, Hank Greenberg played. After the game, our sponsor, Sherman Bernstein, took us to Hunds Restaurant in downtown Detroit for an after game food treat. We all sat at a long table that had been prepared for us. Ten minutes after we were seated, in walked Hank Greenberg and seat down at the head of the table. The thrill to us boys of having our hero at our table was like having G-d sitting in that sat. I remember that Hank was so "down to earth" and was willing to answer the many questions we threw at him — he was one of us. He picked up the check for all of us. With the money we had saved for the meal, we pur- chased baseball shirts, had them lettered "The Bar Mitzvah Club," and played any available team in Flint. The Detroit Tigers had a farm team in Flint, and once a year they came to play an exhibition game. That year, when they came for their an- nual game, Hank Greenberg came for a promised visit to our shul. Of course, the entire Bar Mitzvah Club was there to see him. Again, he was "one of the boys," kib- bitzing and giving batting tips. There were some Chris- tian kids watching— I think they would have converted at that moment, had Hank re- quested them to do so ... Please know that my people are bitterly outraged! We the Sephardic community here . are in . a state of shock. We empathize strongly with our eastern brethern, and are, therefore suffering along with them, both mor- ally and emotionally. We here feel blessed for having enjoyed a happy free- dom of worship ... and wish to express our thanks to God by stretching out a helping hand to the families of the 21 congregants whose lives were snuffed out as they were praying in the synagogue on the Sabbath ... In this vein, our board of directors has unanimously agreed to do- nate $1,000 toward the re- construction of the sanctuary of worship. I feel certain that many of our own congregants will help to raise additional funds from the general community-at-large to further their efforts .. . David Chicorel President, Sephardic Community Many Thanks To Sinai Staff This past year could have been a horrible nightmare, had it not been for a select group of people, whose lives, as I see it, are dedicated to those of us who are fighting our way back from chronic illnesses. The trauma of a 13-week siege at Sinai Hospital was lessened significantly by the dedication of the staff in CICU and the pulmonary care unit. Without their in- spiration and constant encouragement, I would not have been able to express my feelings today. My doctors have been the mainstay of my existence, and there are not enough ways to say thank you for all the wonderful things they have done for, and to, me. I am so deeply grateful to all of the people who helped me to regain my strength and to surmount many adver- sities, and my one wish is that God bless them all, and I pray that they will have long, happy and healthy lives. Rosilyn Goldberg Southfield Harvard 'Defiled' By Hosting Saudi With much fanfare, Har- vard University celebrated its 350th anniversary, but it was defiled by the staging of a "seminar" on the world oil market, presided over by Sheikh Yamani. In 1936, when Harvard was 300, it knew better than to have Al Capone lecture on the na- tional liquor market. I am reminded that in 1934, when all Harvard decision-makers were WASP, they adamantly refused an offer of money from Hitler (the offer came from "Putzi" Hanfstaengl, one of Hitler's friends from the 1923 putsch, who had studied at Harvard around 1914). Yet it was none other than Dean Henry Rozorsky who took handouts from the Arab Hithrs. Ralph Slovenko ProfessoY Law and Psychiatry, Wayne State University (
