"The backbone of my life and who the restaurant is named after" said Jim Sage as he put his arms around wife Alia, in seventh month of their second child. The place has been entirely changed ... hanging plants, plants on ledges, slow whirl- ing ceiling fans, canopy out- side and inside, wide open expanse now, pictures on walls, goldfish tank, wicker chairs, green-padded booths outlined with wood, mirrored walls ... intimate family din- ing. Chris Hatzilis, former Beef '11 Bird boss on Southfield is Jim's head chef ... and turned down the lights . rolling out a huge flaming prime ribe of beef a la the late Sammy Lieberman and Raleigh House ... An accor- dianist emcee led the cere- monies ... and a troupe of six exotic dancers individu- ally shook to musical tapes. People took pictures ... especially of the dancers ... as they did their movements. Chris twirled his mustache, son Louie carved the roast beef ... hors d'oeuvres were passed around ... and the buffet had food that folks enjoy ... Southfield was re- presented by councilpersons Vicki Goldbaum, Susan Goldstein and Sid Lantz; treasurer Roman Gronkowski and code enforcement gent Mort Stein ... Mayor Char- lotte Rothstein represented Oak Park, other side of Greenfield ... where Jim and Alia previously owned Re- mal's. Place was packed with people happy for this fine couple ... Ray Goldbaum and daughter Yael; Willie Geer, Marty Lesser, Cary Green- berg, Bernie Stein dancing with Mort; Blanche Tuchman, etc. NO MORE OLIVERIO'S at Pine Lake Mall, Orchard Lake Rd. ... with original The Aristocrat owners, Dr. Lina Laxa and Dr. Dony Laxa taking it back. ran Fellow who Oliverio's,Artie Oliverio, seems to have flown the coop. As of Sept. 29, following his return from Milan, Italy, the very popular Jack McCarthy takes over ... and it will be called "Jack McCai thy's Aristocrat" ... This is good news, since Jack is probably one of the finest gentlemen in the reslaurant business ... He still hosts the "Friday Feast" show on Channel 7, but will probably give up his little 60-seater restaurant on Cass Lake Rd. in Keego Harbor. Jack knows more about Cajun cooking than most folks ... having been born in New Iberia, La., heart of Cajun country ... Much of what he'll serve at his Aris- tocrat will probably be the original New Orleans fare. Jack's restaurant on Cass Lake Rd. seats only about 60 for dining ... At his Aristo- crat, he'll easily seat about twice as much ... and serve cocktails. Big things presently for Jack are his wonderful cater- ing ... and teaching Cajun cooking in homes. Morris Margulies recently purchased the Pine Lake Mall ... and having Jack and wife Carole is probably the first biggest and best thing that has happened to him there. HY HORENTSTEIN may have retired from the delica- tessen business ... but his former place hasn't ... in Dexter-Davison Plaza, Ten Mile and Coolidge. It is now called "Sara's Deli" ... opened Sept. 10. ... owned by Morris "Moishe" Goodman ... and named after his mother, Sara Tug- man, who makes the stuffed cabbage, gefilte fish, meat- balls, goulash, etc. Her picture as an 18-year- old Sara Goodman is on the wall when customers ' enter ... and on the cover of the delicatessen menu. Moishe started in the deli- catessen business as a busboy at Lou's on Six Mile when 15 years old ... In three years, he was managing for the late Shel Loewy ... and stayed there 20 years. His wife, Ruth, worked ten years at Lou's and does ev- erything he does ... plus take care of their four- month-old Jeremy and 13- year-old David. In the kitchen, Chef Mark Levine makes the soups, chopped liver and foods from Sara's guarded recipes. Moishe's sister, Eva Tug- man, is his cashier. It seats 58, has a counter with four stools, is much lighter than before ... com- pletely cleaned and remod- eled, has pictures on walls of movie stars in their heydays ... Almost everything has been replaced plus booths re- covered and boxed. Just about all the food at Sara's Delicatessen is made there ... The corned beef is bought raw and cooked like yesteryears in an old- fashioned wet steamer ... Roast beef and tongue also ... They make their own potato salad and cole slaw, dressings, potato latkes, luk- shen (noodle) pudding, double-baked bread cut by hand, etc. Moishe worked with brother Marty Goodman the 20 years at Lou's and both opened the old Stafford's locale together on Seven Mile and Evergreen ... Now he has branched out by himself ... and wants to make Sara's like the first Lou's on Six Mile years ago. His love is in the old-time delicatessens ... as Moishe's theme implies ... "Turn back the hands of time — the old- fashioned deli is back." Sara Tugman's dream (that's the title of a sandwich named after her) has been for Moishe to have his own deli- catessen ... It is now a reality. THE WORD IS OFFI- CIAL now ... didn't want to say anything until I was cer- tain ... Jakks Lounge on Greenfield and Ten Mile has been closed by owners Dick and Aggie LaCombe. Those who enjoyed going to what some called "their sec- ond home" are drawing own conclusions as to why Jakks was closed. Hardly any doubt that it will open again ... only question is by whom. For certain the place needs a facelift ... and a change in name wouldn't be too bad. FOURTH LOU'S DELI- CATESSEN, owned by Marty Goodman and Steve Loewy, is another in fast food deli chain they are building ... It is like a McDonald's or Burger King would be ... with 102 seats for people to sit after going up and getting their food. Locale of Lou's number four is at former Jan Drake Greenfield Cafe on Greenfield just south of Nine Mile. Kelly Burgess writes ... "The Sweet Sixteen" birthday party that Dr. Marshall and Dee Shapiro threw at Ginopolis Restaurant, 12 Mile and Middlebelt, Far- mington Hills, for their beau- tiful dark-haired daughter, Stacie, will long be remem- bered by friends and relatives (125), some of whom flew in from Toledo, Ohio and from Bangor, Maine for the won- derful affair. "Always congenial and sin- cere, Dee and Marshall, Stacie and their handsome son, Mark, stationed them- selves at the entrance to the restaurant, greeting each guest as if every one's presence made the party worth having and making each guest feel personally welcome. "Underneath the splurge of pink and silver spangled bal- loons attached to the ceiling of the dance floor, 65 teena- gers and some adults brave enough to try it, rocked and rolled, dancing the night away with more energy than this writer has seen in a long time. "At lovely tables adorned with tiny pink balloons in charming black top hats, other guests enjoyed delicious Greek salads, chicken, ribs and the famous Ginopolis gyros stuffed into pita bread (lamb, tomato, onion and let- tuce) and drinks. "During a sentimental and touching ceremony by Dee and Marshall, she presented daughter Stacie with a lovely bouquet of long-stemmed American Beauty roses. Mar-
