LEV YERUSHALAYIM APARTMENT HOTEL NEWS French-Jewish Film Festival Cancelled (one way, based on round trip purchase) 'Airfares are quoted roUndtrip. Certain travel days and restrictions may apply. Suite 102, Southfield, 1 MOST FLORIDA CITIES Paris (JTA) — The Jewish film festival scheduled to be held here later this month was cancelled last week by the cinema owners, the Publicis-Matignon Company. The reason they gave was the wave o _ f terrorism in France which posed a major risk to the festival. Festival Director Emile Weiss, whose own cinema was destroyed by an explosion in March 1985, said that °°can- ceiling the Festival is tanta- mount to giving in to the ter- rorist. Giving into terror will turn the terrorists into the victors". Weiss said that he is trying to find another movie house to present the program of 60 films on Jewish themes. The Chief Rabbi of France, Rene Samuel Sirat, joined the heads of the five other main religious groups in France condemning the terrorist at- tacks and fully backing the government's decision not to give in to the terrorists' ultimatum. Among the other five signatories are the Arch- bishop of Paris, Cardinal Jean-Marie Lustiger; the dean of the Paris Mosque, Sheikh Mohammed Orras, and the president of the Pro- testant Federation, The Rev. Jacques Maury. Seven people were killed and nearly 200 wounded over the last 10 days in a wave of wild and indiscriminate bombing attacks. The targets were a Paris cafeteria, a post office, police headquarters and a popular clothing store. All of the attacks are believed to have been carried out by a Lebanese terrorist gang which is demanding the liberation of their leader, Georges Ibrahim Abdullah, and two other terrorists serv- ing prison sentences in France for terrorists attacks. Abdullah, serving a four year sentence for entering France with a forged pass- port, is also suspected of hav- ing masterminded and di- rected the murders of Amer- ican Military Attache Lt. Col. Charles Ray in January, 1983 and of Israeli diplomat Yaakov Barsimantov three months later. The vice president of the European Jewish Congress, Jean Kahn, called on the European Parliament in Strasbourg to draft and ratify at the earliest moment an in- ternational convention that would make mandatory the extradition of wanted ter- rorists by all member states. Kahn also met with the cur- rent President of the 21- member state Council of Europe, Italian Foreign Minister Giulio Andreotti, to call for a °°change in policy" by a number of members- states which previously show- ed unwarranted . leniency towards terrorism and ter- rorists. Kahn accused Italy, Greece and France of past failure in fighting terrorism. The Council of Europe later adopted a resolution express- ing its full solidarity with France and called on member- states to combat terrorism. Andreotti announced that a special Ministerial Commit- tee will meet to organize in- ternational cooperation in this matter. The recent wave of terrorist attacks has hardened the French population's anti- Arab sentiments and in- directly increased Israel's popularity. All French leaders, except the Com- munists, have pointed to Israel's anti-terrorist measures as an example which France should follow. Austria Held Waldheim File Vienna (JTA) — The Aust- rian government had in 1971 completed a secret file on Kurt Waldheim, containing documentation of his Nazi past, but withheld it from scrutiny at the time when Waldheim was seeking to be- come secretary general of the United Nations, according to the magazine Profil, which first broke the story on Wal- dheim's past last March. Since then, the World Jewish Congress has unearthed numerous documents connect- ing Waldheim to Nazi activi- ties before and during World War II. The secret Waldheim file was reportedly assembled by Austrian army intelligence so that the government would be armed with information about Waldheim in the event that questions were raised about him in the course of his UN campaign. European Calls For PLO Role Jerusalem (JTA) — Foreign Minister Jacques Poos of Luxembourg, in Israel on a three-day visit, called on Israel to recognize the right of Palestinians to self- determination. In addition, he said that any Middle East peace talks must include the Palestine Liberation Organ- ization. Poos met with 15 Palesti- nians from the West Bank, most of them prominent PLO supporters. According to par- ticipants at the meeting, he said he supported the 1980 Venice Declaration of the European Economic Commu- nity (EEC) that supported Palestinian self- determination and the inclu- sion of the PLO in Mideast peace talks.
