he told the group.
"It was a report," Rev. Ice
explained "He was trying to
make a point of how hard it
is to get Palestinians" to
meet with Jews.
"There's a great difficulty
in persuading Muslims to
participate in anything with
Jews," Rabbi Hertz agreed,
but argued that Unis was
trying to "inflame the group.
He was raising his voice," the
rabbi emphasized.
Security personnel were
highly visible throughout the
day. Measures taken were
"precautionary," according to
Rev. Ice. "There was no overt
threat."
Small groups of program
participants discussed signs
of hope in interfaith rela-
tions, including the name
change of the local branch of
the National Conference of
Christians and Jews to
"Greater Detroit Interfaith
Round Table," indicating the
inclusion of area Muslims
into the network. Detroit was
seen by many as a pioneer in
three-way talks.
Also mentioned were at-
tempts to diffuse problems
before they arise; mixed
neighborhoods where differ-
ent religions and ethnic
groups can learn about each
other; and clergy who join the
staff of another house of wor- •
ship.
Discussing "workable prob-
lems" — problems where a
solution can be found — par-
ticipants suggested the teach-
ing of tolerance in public
schools; encouraging the
media to "make the distinc-
tion that all Muslims are not
Arabs and all Arabs are not
terrorists"; and protecting the
rights of religious minorities
by, for example, eliminating
problems at the workplace
caused by the observance of
religious holidays.
Dr. Siddiqi was the third
Muslim chosen as conference
leader. The second, Moham-
med Abdulkhair Zaki
Badawi, had a conflicting
engagement and had to bow
out, according to Ann Mac-
Cready of the University of
Detroit.
Ismail al-Faruqi, who was
originally slated to speak,
was assassinated in Philadel-
phia on May 27. A memorial
service was held for him at
the close of the day's proceed-
ings.
