H

aifa — Israel usually
makes headlines
when the news is
sensational, but the indi-
vidual little snippets of nor-
mal existence get little atten-
tion beyond a few lines at the
bottom of the page. A collec-
tion of these can often serve
as a mirror held up to the
fascinating, ever-changing
life in Israel.
For example:Big Business.
The arms-to-Iran scandal
calls attention to the fact
that Israel is currently ex-
porting arms at a rate of
about a billion dollars a year,
constituting some 20-25 per-
cent of its total exports. Cus-
tomers are in 50 countries.
The best selling products, ac-
Israel
cording to the
Economist, are Kfir planes,
Merkava tanks, Uzi sub-
machine guns, Garbriel sea-
to-sea missiles and drone
planes.
From Head to Foot. Yair
Zaban, left-wing Mapam
member of the Knesset, and
known as an atheist, was
twitted by socialist friends
because he had deferentially
donned a kipa (skull cap) to
listen to a Talmud lesson. His
reply: "I have noticed that all
the great opponents of the
religious kipa have no hesita-
tion in removing their shoes
when entering a mosque."
But Not Counted for a
Minyan. The Shekem meat-
processing plant in Holon
now markets minced kosher
meat, under rabbinical
supervision, for dogs.
Halacha (Jewish Law) does
not forbid feeding non-kosher
meat to dogs, but many cus-
tomers have complained they
did not want to store non-
kosher meat in their re-
frigerators, even it it was for
a dog.
Unfavorable Balance.

Whereas the Jewish popula-
tion of the Negev is less
today than it was eight years
ago, wild animal life there
has increased, thanks in
large measure to the efforts
of the wild life protection
society. Perhaps the emphasis
is being placed on the wrong
creatures.
Talmud Unlimited. Plans
to place a time limit on local
phone calls have run into a
snag. The daily Talmud les-
son, which religious subscrib-
ers listen to faithfully, runs
to more than the proposed
time limit, and a 'method is
being sought for making such
calls unlimited in the phone
company's computer.
The Stars, and Beyond.
After completing their talks
with Israel's defense estab-
lishment, the science and
engineering members of
President Reagan's Star Wars
delegation to Israel paid a
visit to the Western Wall
where, to be on the safe side,
they poked little bits of paper
with their private memoran-
dum requests into the cre-
vices of the Wall.
Good Use for the Money.
Salam Barbak, a 36-year-old
day laborer from Khan Yunis
in the Gaza Strip, broke two
records. He was the first
resident of the territories to
win a grand prize in an Israel
lottery, and he received
$360,000, the largest sum
ever won, in the weekly
Sports-Toto game. He says
the money will now enable
him to acquire three more
wives.
They Got the Point. More
than 100 mohelim (ritual cir-
cumcisers) attended a con-
vention in Jerusalem which
dealt seriously with both
medical and halachic prob-
lems of their profession. No
cuts were made in the
scheduled program.
When
Tov.
Mazal
