FRUIT & GIFT 1-F2 BASKETS Tribute To John Grauel Friends must never be for- gotten. Their deeds won't permit forgetfulness. When a non-Jew, an aspir- 'ing clergyman, dedicates himself to rescuing Jews who were destined for the cre- matoria, his memory rises to great heights. John Stanley Grauel was such a Christian. He recog- nized injustice and battled to \- /-- - defeat it. He was one of a handful of non-Jews who joined the Jewish libertarians in the struggle against the British when they shut the doors to Jewish Palestine to survivors from the death camps seeking a way to a new life in a free Jewish commonwealth. He was with these survivors on the ill- / • fated Exodus whose justice- \ seeking passengers were de- ) , nied the freedom they sought and were sent back to Marse- illes. Most of the passengers landed back in displaced per- • sons camps. When he found a \ way to Eretz Israel he joined the Haganah and fought for what was soon to become the sovereign State of Israel. He was a very young man, \ in his twenties, when he joined the Jewish freedom seekers on the Exodus in July of 1947. He was not a mere adventurer. He knew for the rest of his life that Is- rael needed support, that the Jewish State to which he dedicated himself needed de- fense. Therefore, he pleaded for cooperation in behalf of the United Jewish Appeal and Israel Bonds, and in that aim made friends here in the ranks of the Allied Jewish Campaign. At his own request Grauel was buried in Israel and sur- vivors of Nazism served as his honor guard. It is good to remember him as a friend and now to pay tribute to his memory. Harriette Simons .. . Standard Bearer In Two Generations Max Lieberman. She grew up in a home where dedication to peoplehood was on a high level. Max Lieberman was among the generous and the spiritually devoted. Among the leaders in Cong. Shaarey Zedek, he guided many toward generosity to Jewish needs. He was a pioneer in the Detroit Jewish National Fund tasks, a Herzlian Zionist, an observer in the highest trends of Jewish de- votions. It was in an atmosphere of family dignity that Harriette gained the loyalties that began in Shaarey Zedek in her childhood. She continued her loyalties at Temple Beth El when she married Leonard 36 years ago. It was an unin- terrupted sharing of the iden- tifications of her husband with the Jewish and civic movements, with the inter- racial and inter-faith. She traveled with him along the roads he pursued and the movements he embraced. She was with him when he traveled to France, for the dedication of monuments to Detroit pioneers, to Israel to support JNF and the Hebrew University. Every movement Leonard appraised in his book Simons Says, which he dedicated to her on his 80th birthday and then the 54th year of their married life, be- came her movement. Harriette was present at every function at which Leonard was honored, includ- ing commencements when when he was awarded honor- ary doctorates. Last week's Purely Commentary con- tained the text of the Maryg- rove College citation award- ing him an honorary docto- rate. Dr. John Shay, Maryg- rove president, brought a specially engraved text of the citation to Leonard Simons at Sinai Hospital, where he was visiting Harriette during her first hospitalization. When she was asked whether she wanted the citation read to her, she replied: "But I heard the text when it was read to Leonard at the Marygrove commencement." That was the last of the important communal events she shared with her husband. Harriette Lieberman Si- mons was known and will be remembered among the noble ladies of two generations. Harriette Simons was a standard bearer in two of De- troit's very eminent genera- tions. She was important in her own — as the life partner of her husband, Leonard N. Si- mons. She benefitted among her mentors the Jewish devotions and the dignity of her father, Amsterdam (JTA) — President Kurt Waldheim of Austria will not be among the heads of state attending the of- ficial opening on Oct. 4 of the Easter Scheldt Dam, a major new hydraulic power project. Austria will be represented by its Foreign Minister, P. Jan- kevitsch, and speculation is rife as to whether the Dutch government discreetly advised Waldheim to stay away or the Austrians themselves decided. OMEGA \446.
