Jerusalem wanted to express
his congratulations to King
Hussein on the latter's 50th
birthday not long ago, he in-
serted a 2 column by 2 inch
advertisement of congratula-
tions, all in Hebrew, in one of
Israel's Hebrew dailies.

Balance. In one of the
Knesset committees an Arab
member proposed that all
road safety and warning
signs should be worded in
Arabic as well as in Hebrew.
The member of a Jewish reli-
gious party countered that all
such signs should also bear
the words "God willing". Be-
fore any further suggestions
could be made, that might
clutter up the signs, the
committee rejected both
suggestions.

Over-Organized? Israelis
must love to join societies or
go to meetings. Otherwise,

how to account for such
organizations, publicly regis-
tered, as the Israel-
Malagasay Republic Friend-
ship Society; Union of Inven-
tors; Israel Association for
Soilless Culture; Association
of Soda-Stand Owners; Public
Committee for the Defense of
the Dignity of Man; Society
of Immigrants from China;
Organization for Encourage-
ment of the Birth Rate in Is-
rael; Alliance of Friends of
Hagar?
Mikveh in Prison. Of the
more than 250 prisoners in
Israel's jails who became
religious in the past ten
years, less than 3 percent
found their way back behind
bars, an unprecedented re-
cord. A mikveh (ritual bath)
is now being built in the
"religious wing" of the Beer
Sheva prison, where inmates
are now engaged in religious
yeshiva studies.

tempest in a teepee.
That's how a New
York newspaper de-
scribed the latest revelations
of the exotic story of Shemesh
Katan, Hebrew for Little
Sun, a Sioux Indian who last
month went to Israel to be-
come a Bar Mitzvah.
According to first accounts,
Little Sun Bordeaux is the
great grandson of Chief
Crazy Horse, the Sioux war-
rior who helped massacre
General Custer and his forces
in 1876. Arrnalona Green-
field, Little Sun's mother,
claimed that her 13-year-old
son, the product of three gen-
erations of Jewish women
who married Indian men, is
eligible to become chief of the
Oglala Indians.
But Shemesh Katan, who
was given a Jewish education
in Spokane, Wash., an-

nounced in Israel that "he
would like to be a rabbi." The
story is delicious, but Little
Sun's Father, Chief Eagle,
spiked it by declaring that
Chief Crazy Horse had no
children.
The whole episode was an
El Al promotion, and it's a
pity that it backfired some-
what by the flamboyant
claims. Nevertheless, it did
raise once again the long-
standing legend that Ameri-
canindians are in fact one of
the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel.
The prophets Jeremiah and
Ezekiel predicted the even-
tual restoration of the Ten
Lost Tribes on the eve of re-
demption. For a moment, Lit-
tle Sun Bordeaux almost
seemed to be the advance
man of the restoration. So if
he doesn't become an Indian
chief, at least he could be-
come the first Siouxish
Jewish rabbi.
