NEWS Israel Bolsters Lebanon Army ItS TO BE 011E G111)01,11r. Tel Aviv (JTA) — Defense Minister Yitzhak Rabin last week instructed the Israel Defense' force to send more equipment to the South Lebanon Army (SLA) in the security zone north of the Israel-Lebanon border. The equipment is intended to bolster the SLA in the face of attacks from Shiite forces in and north of the zone in re- cent days. Israel Radio reported that the Defense Ministry was also considering sending more Israeli troops to the security zone if the attacks continue and SLA morale sinks further. The 2,000-strong mainly Christian SLA has lost 75 men in the 15 months since Israel withdrew most of its forces from Lebanon. Israeli security sources con- firm that several hundred IDF men still operate in the security zone, mainly in liaison and training capacities with the SLA. Hospital disruption was not as great as it would have been on a normal day, as no elective surgery is scheduled for Fridays, and many pa- tients are sent home for the weekend. The nurses, who held a 17-day strike some months ago, said they had ordered the walkout because of the government's apparent lack of interest in meeting their salary and work demands. Both sides, the Finance Ministry and the Nurses Association, have again been presenting to the media con- tradictory salary slips to back up their conflicting claims of their present incomes.
