It is the customer make us #1 this fault in the system that we are trying to correct with our attorneys through the courts. To the credit of our mashgiach, who was unaware of the actual findings of our detective, Mr. Steinmetz found several pieces of non- kosher meat sequestered under the display cases in front. Our supervisor, who himself had been a butcher for 30 years, questioned Ber- nard and was told that meat was for a non-kosher re- staurateur for whom he was doing a favor. The Vaad called Mr. Rayber down to our offices some two hours later. At that time he denied the whole story and without knowing that we had the statement of our detective, claimed that our supervisor was "out to get him" and that he never had non-kosher meat in the store. When asked if we could see the meat in question, Mr. Rayber responded that he had already sold it to a man named Jack who ran a golf club in the area. "How often did Jack come into the store?" we asked the butcher. He replied that Jack came in about every other week, bought about $150 worth of meat and, no, he did not know a last name, location or phone number of one of his biggest customers. The clubs we called in the area didn't know of a Jack who pur- chased meat, nonetheless, kosher meat for the club. We had every in- tention'to take the matter to court but unfortunately the kosher law is a criminal sta- tute, one in which we do not have standing. Except for plirsuing the Agriculture Dept. to be more responsive to our needs in the future, our legal options are limited. It is with full revelation of the story above that I wish to examine the report in your newspaper of this very same butcher being exonerated by Rabbi Jack Goldman of the Metropolitan Kashrus Coun- cil. First of all, Rabbi "Our suspicions . . . began when his purchase of kosher meats from the wholesalers began to slip .. . Goldman decided that our supervisor must be biased which translates as that he maliciously lied to ruin this butcher for some under- handed motive. The entire conversation that Rabbi Goldman had with Mr. Steinmetz lasted less than two minutes, according to Mr. Steinmetz who was working at the time. It ended with Mr. Steinmetz telling Rabbi Goldman that he was not re- sponsible to him and that any information that he wanted to know could be had through the Vaad. Perhaps this was the source of our supervisor's "bias." Secondly, Rabbi Goldman was only able to guess as to what our detec- tive saw. I was not willing to provide him with detailed in- formation because it became apparent that whatever was told to him went straight back to the butchers. As we were originally planning to pursue this matter in court, we were loath to show our hand. At no time did the, rabbi attempt to contact the Vaad or our investigator be- fore he issued his full exon- eration. I can only assume, unwittingly, he became a pawn for the unscrupulous. The fact. that Rabbi Goldman chose to enter this fray is even harder to under- stand in light of his long standing publicly-stated opin- ion that no buther without a non-Sabbath observant prop- rietor could ever be kosher with the presence of a full- time supervisor. In other words, according to Rabbi Goldman, this store was, in his own words, treif to begin - with. What does it mean that the Metropolitan Kashrus Council inspects but does not certify these type of stores? If the meat that goes out of the
