RAMADA HOTEL 28225 Telegraph Rd. (just S. of 12 Mile) SOUTHFIELD CALL FOR RESERVATIONS: (313) 355-2929 Back Stage Continued from preceding page this period of phenomenal growth for the organization, D.T. became seriously ill and, in only a few months, the scrappy Detroiter who had founded an American theater empire second in size only to the Shubert Organization, was dead. Though very ill, he actively participated in the family business until he died. Before D.T. was laid to rest, a eulogist would comment on the large crowd attending funeral services in Southfield: "D.T. would have been pleased — it's a packed house." In the years following D.T.'s death, Robert would join Jimmy and Joey in the busi- ness, serving as an attorney for the group. Harry, a former salesman, would take on the Birmingham Theater, another family concern, in 1978. Pine Knob and the Masonic came into the fold, along with addi- tional theaters on Broadway and across the U.S. The Neder- landers began to produce shows to fill the many theaters, including such blockbusters as Applause on Broadway, and Stop the World, I Want To Get Off, for the road. In 1981, they joined forces with the Shuberts to bring the Royal Shakes- peare Company's Nicholas Nickleby to New York. Unfortunately, not all was well back on the homefront. Ticket prices, unemployment, and Detroit's crime rate began to climb. Many scheduled shows never quite made it to the Fisher stage. Ticket sales began to fall considerably, and the Fisher went dark — some- times for weeks at a time. "This was the best show town in America," Joey Neder- lander once told the Free Press. The media, he said, had "made everybody scared to come here . . . everybody was afraid of getting killed. That's non- sense." As to the -future of the family itself, it's a good bet the Neder- landers will be making their mark in the theater business for year to come. "We intend to keep on operating our theaters, and producing shows for them," Harry Nederlander says, as he prepares for the suburban Birmingham's season opener, Bob Fosse's Dancin; , on Sept. 30. There are also plans for ven- tures into cablevision, a couple of comedies in the works, and a new partnership with Broad- way producer Jerry Weintraub to develop shows for six of the Nederlanders' New York theaters. A new generation of Neder- landers is on the scene, too, looking forward to carrying on the family tradition. Harry's son, Wayne, 31, is vice president for Nederlander con- certs, in charge of the organ- ization's outdoor music theat- ers. Scott, 27, is manager of the River Bend Theater in Cincin- nati. James, Jr. oversees oper- ations at the Kingswood Music Theater in Toronto.
