BEST OF EVERYTHING

DANNY RASKIN

RE-
MANY
STAURATEURS will tell
you ... some very emphati-
cally . that food alone or
with cocktails are not the
prime reasons why customers
return ... which is an almost
absolute must in the restau-
rant game.
Number one is service ...
and if there is anything
higher than one ... perhaps
one-plus ... it's personal
service ... Even higher
would be good family service.
The latter is considered an
epitome ... but this is what
CJ's on Nine Mile, just west
of Middlebelt, that used to
have signage of "Be My
Guest," dotes upon with strict
fervor.
When Willie Stargell was
with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
he created the "We Are Fam-
ily" theme that carried his
baseball team to a World
Series victory ... Everyone
who works at CJ's is like
family ... and to go with
this, they have what the Pi-
rates didn't ... many active
family members also ...
Owners are Charles and Lor-
raine Wilson and son John
... Charles and Lorraine do
the overseeing and boasting
... while John is head chef at
lunch and dinner ... and
general manager.
Then there's smiling,
happy and very personable
daughter Lynn, head waitress
and prep cook ... daughter
Ann, bargal and waitress ...
daughter Lisa, waitress ...
and daughter Charleen, prep
cook, hostess and bookkeeper.
The Wilsons took over
Mike Watzman's place on
Aug. 6 of last year ... and
have made a difference ...
with clientele ... and infor-
mal dining more conduciv e
for family atmosphere.
There is no loud music ...
and the dance floor has been
carpeted with Oriental rugs
that now have tables on
them.
Everything is made from
scratch now at CJ's ... with
its very informal surrounding
and tender loving care for
customers ... Nothing like a
family affair ... If people
have any complaints at CJ's,
chances are one of the wait-
persons is a Wilson family-ite
... and if not, the gal or guy
employee such as Janice
Economon, waitress and bar-
lassie; Sandy Mudge, evening
waitress; etc. is still 100 per-
cent customer satisfaction
oriented ... Nothing better
than having a family member
straighten out whatever dis-
contentment may occur ...
Chances are very high that it
will not only bring satisfac-
tion ... but also the person
or persons back again.
Everything at CJ's is made
from scratch ... closely re-
sembling home cooking ... It
makes its own rolls and
bread, pizza dough, soups,
salad dressings, spaghetti
sauce, etc.
John is quite adamant with

his three Qs ... Quality food,
quality service and quality
prices ... People like this ...
it goes so great with family
care.
Overall chef lass who
makes so many very tasty
dishes, Virginia Autonno, is a
regular customer at Eastern
Market and Randazzo Market
for her fresh vegetables ...
Virginia also does most of the
prep work and bakes the
bread and rolls.
Head night cook who made
our delicious chicken par-
migiana, with side of
spaghetti topped by
homemade. sauce (vegetarian
on request), was Ron Kibner
... working in an immacu-
late and spacious kitchen
with all the facets necessary
for good, sound cooking ...
There's even a charbroiler
grill ... and customers just
love those grade-A steaks
that come off it ... not to say
anything about the price of a
22-ounce steak plus dinner at
any hour of day for $10.95.
CJ's is not a pretentious
place ... and doesn't pretend
to be ... Nothing fancy ...
There's 135 seating at booths
and tables ... with green
plastic tablecloths.... White
paper napkins are during
lunch and beige cloth nap-
kins are at dinner.
You can't miss CJ's
There is a big sign and
canopy out front ... It's open
Monday-Friday, 11 a.m. to
midnight; and Saturday, 1
p.m. to 1 a.m. ... The
kitchen closes 10 p.m. each
night, but a separate snack
menu is available after the
grill is shut off.
Going over big is the
Physician's Weight Loss ap-
proved menu ... John was 20
pounds overweight and went
through its entire routine ...
Result was a separate menu
enclosed within the regular
one, which is also new ...
keeping only the favorites.
CJ's is so family oriented
.. even some of the custom-
ers feel like family ... that it
has its own bowling league
.. made up of employees and
patrons ... The Wilsons
sponsor a baseball team, also
... and their young grand-
children play full-fledged
football.
Willie Stargell had his "We
Are Family" winner in the
National League ... and CJ's
Food & Spirits Family Dining
has its own in the restaurant
game ... If you like intimate
family dining ... with a big
touch of TLC, you'll be a reg-
ular at CJ's.
THERE WILL BE AN-
OTHER Larco's sitdown res-
taurant again ... The one-
time very popular spot, such
a big favorite on W.
McNichols and San Juan ...
was run by Pete, Mike and
Nick Larco.
The new Larco's will be
opened by Pet's son Mark ...
next door to his Larco Bros.
Carry-Out locale in Country
Village Center on Evergreen
