"Ladies and gentlemen, we cannot take our freedoms for granted," he insisted. "If it wasn't for (Sen.) Lowell Weicker and others who will fight with us, your children and grandchildren would be having Christian prayers in their schools." Descending from the podium to speak to his audience face to face, Metzenbaum declared: "I've never quit being . . . a very proud Jew. I was called — and I resented it, but in some sense I am proud of it — the senator from B'nai B'rith." American Jews are so privileged, he said, that they shouldn't have to solicit funds from each other for Jewish charities. Each Jew should ask himself, "What should I do? What can I do? Am I doing enough? If we let our con- sciences be our guide, then this community — as generous as it is — would probably give dou- ble." Answering a question from the audience about Chief Justice-designate William Re- hnquist, Metzenbaum said, "If ever there was a man who shouldn't be chief justice, it is this man." 1 Family Run Pharmacy WALDRAKE PHARMACY KEN JACOBS, R.Ph.
